insurance and rims

does anyone know how much insurance gives you for rims? im thinking about getting another set of wheels locks. oh yea, if you have aftermarket rims, lets say some HRE's or other super expensive ones, does insurance cover that if they get stolen? or maybe i should just leave my car on the blackies those civics run on.

Re: insurance and rims

Every company I've ever dealt with requires a seperate insurance writer to cover aftermarket parts. Usually you need to bring in receipts or take pics.

Re: insurance and rims

Your insurance company will only replace what your car had on it from the factory. If you change the rims you need to let your agent/broker know so the policy can reflect what is really on your car. You also need to inform them about any stero upgrades, paint work, body kits etc... If you don't care about getting back the new additions to your car then say nothing but you run the risk of loosing all of your customizing. You may also see an increase in premium but you get what you pay for. Ask your agent/broker if your carrier requires receipts/invoices or if they use an "agreed value" on your additions. If you have to turn in a claim it will be worth it to not have to fight to get your ride back where you want it.I know I just got my car back on 2/19/04 after some a-hole hit it and ran.

Re: insurance and rims

Dude the factory rims and tires cost so much that if for exapmple your HRE's or something expensive like that got stolen the stock wheels and tires would come close to the price of them. The wheels are $800 a piece and the tires are 280 a piece average or $400 from the dealer. So thats like 4400 for the whole thing and a good set of HRE's cost 5000 with tires.

Re: insurance and rims

Remember that an insurance company only has to replace your stolen or damaged items with: LKQ parts. That means like, kind and quality. You will not get a check for new rims after 1000 miles. The rims have lost value and thats the way insurance works. You don't always get a blank check or free money to play with as is commonly thought.

Re: insurance and rims

I installed aftermarket wheels on my last car and when I called my insurance agent he said that they were covered. All I had to do is save my proof of purchase and take some pictures of the wheels on my car. My premium stayed the same. Granted, this was like six years ago. Call your insurance agent and ask, no harm in that.

Re: insurance and rims

Keep in mind that the insurance landsacpe has changed quite a bit and that checking with your agent/broker is always safe. You just need to hope that their E&O is in place in case you get wrong info. Make sure they know your policy and how that carrier's policy language applies, this is especially important if you used a broker as they have access to many markets and sell many different carriers auto policys.

Re: insurance and rims

Your insurance policy will cover "actual cash value" of the car. The upgrades and such are not covered. The insurance carrier will replace with factory or oem parts. The insurance carrier has the choice to get them for you or give you a check for the value less the deductible. If you have questions please PM me or e-mail: blitzjb@aol.com. I am a licensed NY Insurance broker.

Careful with advice if you aren't licensed in the state of CA. I am and the DOI watches everything, advice can land you in court in this great state.

My firm is licensed in most states. You need not to be licensed to give advice, only to sell Insurance. CA is an Insurance mess, especially WC.

Re: insurance and rims

You don't know the industry and who judges us. Jail ain't the issue.

Re: insurance and rims

You don't understand who judges insurance brokers/agents and how the law applies. If you are in a field that requires a license you have an idea of what I mean.
