I had to post this! I love the color of my G and my wheels, but is the first one I've seen that makes me jealous! (stole the pic off FA)

who said I am racing..more like enjoying...I have about 600 mi on the track out of 7000 mi total. I do believe that many street cars have a very successfull racing career (Showroom stock car racing SCCA) and I personally think it is more fun then true race cars (alot cheaper too). I simply meant that your choice of tires actually degrades performance and you can bend the rims. Slicks would only be good if you raced and it was always dry conditions. If you like the look great. I just dont get it. Everything else, like lowering...cai...exhaust...etc...., increase performance of the car.

First of all, my car handles MUCH better with 20's on it than it ever did with the stock wheels, regardless of what you may think you know. Second of all, if racetrack performance is paramount for you, why wouldn't you buy a true sports car, or at least one that is more dedicated to high performance? Don't get me wrong, the G is no slouch, but I bought mine because of the styling, features, and then performance, in that order. If you are so concerned about performance like you seem to be, why not get a 350Z, Corvette, Boxster, Mustang Cobra, or something of that ilk. If I were to put 20's on something like that, I would expect comments like yours. My car has reclining back seats and a self-dimming rear view mirror for crying out loud! It's more of a luxury car than a sports car, in my opinion, and I'll treat it as such. Save the lowering springs, aftermarket exhaust, CAI and all that other "fashion performance" crap at Pep Boys for guys who drive Civics...

I am not trying to start anything I just think 20" wheels fall into the pep boy category. I think the corvette has self dimming mirrors and is considered a sports luxury. I bought this car because it is the sportiest of 4 door sports cars that money can buy short of an M5. Am I allowed to call an M5 a sports car......I think it has a very similar trim package.

Maybe we just differ on opinion.

I think 20" are silly on a car. Maybe a tahoe with 325/45 tires.

Enjoy the wheels and we can both completely enjoy our G35....we obviously both have that in common.

Hey Gaklid...those wheels you posted from Monty pics.com look like the wheels I want to get....Alessio F1's....so you know I think they look hot too!! I think that the largest size they come in 19's...but 19's are cool too.

>>>>> I want the rim 2 go under the fender so that it looks dropped, but nothing to do with the suspension. I love dropped cars but I left that hobby of dropping cars, and all them other mods. <<<<<

Buying bigger rims to increase the dia. of the overall wheel/tire package will decrease the gap between the fender well and the tire, but it will also raise you off the ground higher. It will look like you gave your car a body lift. If you want a sporty look then keep the overall tire/wheel Diameter the same as stock but just lower the car an 1" with a suspension kit.

Also 20" rims will bend easier then smaller rims because you will have less rubber to protect the rim when you hit potholes. You will also get a stiffer ride with 20" rims vs smaller rims (regardless of what some people on here have said).

For the guy who said he's handling has improved with 20" rims: The only reason its improved over stock is because your using high performance tires now, and by going with a aftermarket rim you have incrased the width of the rim which increases the contact area of the tire on the ground. You will get this situation if you went with aftermarket 17" rims.

Re: 20" or Bigger on Silver G35 Coupe

I'm trying to remain civil... Let me get this straight. 19 inch wheels are okay, but if you go 1 inch bigger its "silly" and for "show." The Corvette, (which was commonly refered to as "America's only sports car" before the Viper came along), is now a "Sports/Luxury" car? Are you kidding? The Vette has some of the worst, cheap interior around, yet is still loved by just about everybody. Know why? Because it's a sports car, and people don't by it for it's luxury, they buy it because it's fast! Get real! Nobody brings up a Vette when you're talking about luxury cars. A M5 is a sports sedan, just like a G35, (albeit cheaper), and there are optional 19in. wheels. If they went to 20's, it would still be a sports sedan, just like a G35. Honestly, you think larger diameter rims (my overall wheels are only .5 larger than stock) are silly and only for show, but a huge exhaust tip and a loud exhaust are somehow purposeful? Even if you did get a horsepower increase, it would only be about 5 to 10 horses at the most, and despite what the aftermarket exhaust salesman tells you, you can't "feel" that in the seat of you pants!
In reply to:

What am I, stupid? I fully understand the concept of "plus sizing." Please explain to me how I'm going to get the same handling and look with 17 in. wheels that I have now with 20's, without lowering the car. How stupid would my car look with a 245/35/17 and stock springs? The way to fill that gap is with rim that doesn't flex, like a tire does. I also understand the negative effects of a pothole on a low profile tire/rim setup, and potholes damage 19's just like they damage 20's. I live in sunny California, and my streets aren't ravaged by potholes and snowplows. The amazing thing to me is that every person who has seen my car and asked "what size are those rims?" is shocked when I say 20's They think they're 18's! In fact, now lets be honest, if I said the wheels on my car in the picture above were 19's, everybody would love it. Theres some type of stigma attached to 20's, (pimp, bling bling) and I, for one, am not so judgemental...

Those are Millie Miglia Evo 5's. The Tirerack sells them, and they're pretty inexspensive. They come in 19's, but not in chrome, though..

Re: 20" or Bigger on Silver G35 Coupe

We all need to chill a bit...no wars please. Same side remember.

Personally, I love 20" rims and if I could afford them I would. However the down side in my mind is the 'pot hole' situation with bending rims, the fact that the weigh a lot more, and they attract a lot of attention (sometimes unwanted attention).

gakild > Something to consider is that 20" with the right rubber are not supposed to make your car look lower. The overall wheel diameter is supposed to stay the same with the stock wheel in order keep the speedo on 60mph when the needle is on 60mph. By getting larger wheels and rims, you do raise the car and your speedo then becomes off, either driving faster or slower than what the needle says.

True, 19s and 20s aren't THAT big a difference but the profile of tire is added to 35 to 40 which does make a difference in driving comfort and a lesser chance of bending the rim. My 2cents.

It's still a G thang!!

Hey ..Gaklid knows what he is doing..he went with larger rubber to fill out the fender well gap because he DIDNT want to lower the car....and his speedo is not off by much...I have read enough of his posts to know that he makes intelligent decisions based on his individual needs and wants when it comes to his car.

Don't bash the people, just bash the opinions. You know, gaklid's 20"s are on a sedan....
