Wheel Weight: OEM 17's vs OEM 19's

Thinking of getting the forged coupe 19's for my 2004 g35 6spd. I currently have the OEM 17's that come with the sport package and am concerned with hurting performance when going to the the bigger wheels. Should I be concerned as the 19's are forged and probably lighter then the cast 17's?? Thanks in advance for the advice.

did i read this right? Are you concerned that the 19 inch forged wheels are going to be lighter? FYI ligher means less unsprung weight means better acceleration and handling. Go with the forged 19s, your performance gain will be immediate.

It's my understanding that the sport 5-spoke weigh approximately 25lbs and the coupe 19s are ~25lbs for the fronts and about 27lbs for the rear. The other thing to consider is the weight of the tires and the added drag of the wider tires, wheels, and the additional rotation inertia since more the weight is further from the hub. Also, the 19" tires probably weigh 2lbs to 3lbs more than the 215/55R17s. You can be pretty certain that the car will be slower with the 19s. I'd say anywhere from .1 to .2 or basically like loosing about 8 to 15whp. Handling and braking should improve slightly and response should improve quite a bit.

why not something in the middle like the 05-06 18's. Don't know the weight on these though.

i just put one of my stock 17" 6-spoke non-sport wheels on the scale without a tire. it was about 24.5 lbs.

Forged doesn't mean lighter. There are lots of heavy forged rims on the market. HRE's are a prime example.

the forged 19s are more toward the upper 19s and lower 20's weight marks in lb. I dont have exact measurements, but when i had them they were a big improvement over the stock 5 spoke 17s i had. I am aware that forged doesnt always mean lighter, but the coupe 19s are definitely lighter.

often times tires of bigger diameter are actually lighter due to shorter sidewall... example - I was debating on 18" Volks or 19" (16.8 lbs vs 18.1lbs)... T1R tires 245/45/18 are 27lbs, 245/40/19 are 26lbs...

Considering the weight farthest from center is the most critical factor, the bigger diameter tire actually is not a hindrance (in this case)...

This is what the guy meant (of course less weight= better performance).

Imo, the Rays forged 19" OEM coupe wheels allow you to upgrade in diameter and width in both tire and wheel while maintaining a classy stock look and while keeping weight down. B/c sedans don't come in 19s you also get an "aftermarket-look" both while the car is still and while rolling..the wheel has a sexy blade-effect. Plus the offset is very aggressive--it puts the wheels on the corners which also improves handling and aesthetics. If you run dunlop direzzas--they are way cheaper and quieter than the stock bridgestones. If you run a 225/35 front and a 245/35 rear ...some say you won't need to roll fender lips in rear, even with a 1" drop. I think I will roll mine anyway to make sure I get an OEM fit with full on passengers and crap in the trunk etc.

I p/up a set a couple of days ago myself, and hope to get them shipped soon.

i completly agree with what texan1 has to say about the coupe 19's. Those pictures realy show just how agressive and classy the OEM 19's can look on our sedans. You can get them realtively cheap on here without breaking the bank. I am really contemplating getting a set of these for my summer set up. Those pics look SICK.

I would only do that to a scuffed up set with stains and scrapes all over the mother fukcer. NOT a relatively pristine set

nice work though.

FYI Oem 19s weigh ~21-~19lb. They are lighter with the tire on it than the OEM sport 17s. I have picked them up and 19s were lighter.

^^ +1. I'm speaking from personal experience when I say that the Rays 19's are definately lighter than the OEM sedan 17's. My 2003 G came with the 17's, and when I purchased the Rays 19's last fall, I held both of them in my hands. The 17's are cast aluminum and weigh around 25 lbs. The 19's are forged aluminum and weigh around 20 lbs. I was in shock the first time I picked up one of the Rays, it was so light compared to what I expected.

And the point that tires for 19" wheels weigh more than a tires for a 17" wheel is, IMO, not valid. Even though the overall diameter is greater, the sidewall is smaller, so it could break even. But who cares what I hypothesize; here are the facts from TireRack.com:

Kumho Ecsta SPT (tire I'm currently running)
225/50-17 Weight: 26 lbs
225/35-19 Weight: 24 lbs

Goodyear Eagle RS-A
215/55-17 Weight: 27 lbs
225/45-19 Weight: 25 lbs

I've run both and I'd say the oem 19s + the oem RE050s weigh more than the oem 17s on oem 215-55-17s. I can feel the diff in acceleration also. But that might be because the 245-40-19 is a tad taller than the oem size. The RE050s in teh 245 width is in the 26-27lb range. The oem 19 is about 20-21 lbs.
I've detailed the wheel weights before.
