Cleaning Aftermarket Wheels

The brake dust issues on the G35 have been well documented which made me start to think about the headaches that could arise with aftermarket wheels. I mean most of these wheels have many more nooks, crannies, rivets, etc. than the stock G35 wheels. I would think that would make cleaning them a MAJOR pain in the a$$!!

I have installed EBC Greenstuff pads on my Brembos but so far the brake dust has been pretty much the same as it was with the stock pads. It drives me crazy and I'm worried that if I buy aftermarket wheels, I'll never be able to keep them clean!!! I love my car and I don't mind washing it but I'm not one of those people who are ok with wiping the wheels down every other day. I don't want to fork over $3K to have rims that look like crap because they are always covered in brake dust! So should I avoid getting new rims? How do you people with aftermarket wheels deal with keeping them clean?

Re: Cleaning Aftermarket Wheels

C'mon there has to be some people with opinions on this topic!!! Is it hard keeping new wheels clean compared to stock? The stocks are smooth with basically no nooks and they are still a pain. How does this compare to something like the Volk GT7's which have lots of little areas to trap brake dust. Is it hard keeping them nice looking? Do you have to tend to them on an every other day basis?!?!

Re: Cleaning Aftermarket Wheels

How do I know if the wheels are coated with Clearcoat? Are most Volks clearcoated?

i dont think volk is clear coated. Cause I have Gt-c (polished lip) and I used wheel cleaning kit and my polish is fading away.

I know you might think this is crazy to try, but try those dish wash soaps(not ones you put in the dish washer) YOu know soaps that use when u wash dishes with your own hand?
Well I thought it was crazy, but i tried and it get rid off every grease on your wheels and brembos. Make sure you mix those soap with car wash soap. Try it, its 100%safe

Re: Cleaning Aftermarket Wheels

I agree. Dawn dishwashing soap removes all the grease. However, if you have a clearcoat on your wheels, Dawn will possibly remove the clearcoat eventually. I always have a hard time cleaning the lug holes unless you take all the lugs out. I tried the spray on cleaner and they don't work all that well. I think you have to apply it a few times. It was faster if I took a sponge and did it myself. Just my 2 bits on the matter.
