Ordering Tires Online

Everyone keeps suggesting tirerack.com. but i find it cheaper to buy tires locally from a tire shop and have them install them. by the time i order tires online, pay the shipping, then pay someone to mount and balance the tires, it turns out to be more expensive. Am i missing something?

Sounds like you are getting a good deal on your tires locally.

I dont have time to shop around. I have been using Tire Rack for years. They are very competitive and knowledgable.

Re: Ordering Tires Online

Most local shops, at least in the Bay Area, could pull in a better deal because you are getting everything from them (wheels, tires, mounting / balancing.......and possibly other products / services), which is why they could cut a better deal, than say getting tires from Tire Rack directly and then bringing them into a local shop to have them mount / balance the wheels & tires. They have more of an incentive to give the customer a competitive price to first retain the customer and second, their profit margin is sustained.

Re: Ordering Tires Online

It depends. Sometimes local shops can beat tirerack, sometimes they can't. The tires I want for my Sedan are currently running $169 each. A local reputable tire shop wants about $200 each.. as their cost is $167. In this case, even with shipping, tirerack is cheaper... gotta pay the same price for mounting/balancing either way.

Even if you don't buy from them, tirerack makes a good research tool.

By all means, go with the better deal.
