Question how in the world do offsets work???????

ok just a guick ? if your wheels have + offsets of like 22 what does that really mean in terms of lip or lack thereof or if you get a -22 what does that do to your wheels , because im looking into a set of wheels with a 30 or 40,35 or even 25 so if i do any of those what does it really mean, i know i must sound like a complete idiot but i want the visual aspect of my car to be appealing so i dont want some retarded lookin wheel setup. thanks for any and all of your help.

Wiki is your friend.

Basically: too much negative offset and your wheels will stick out, and vice versa.
