Re: wider rims = slow

Gone it all depends on what you want. I went with 19x8.5 rims front/rear and to me the acceleration felt a lot slower than stock even though the wheel was 4lbs lighter than stock 17's each wheel. Its the rotational mass that makes it feel slow but after a month of breaking in the tires and everything it feels great, especially the handling when its lowered with wide tires and mine arent even wide. They are "wider" than stock but only 255 in rear. There is so much traction its hard to slip now, im an Auto though. Again, it all depends on what you want. Martin

If you were a professional race driver....driving on a closed track.....at the very limits of the car.....
Then I'd worry about it. Unless you do something really radical....you probably will not notice much difference in daily highway driving.

agreed. People make too much of a deal out of .1 or .2 in the qrt mile. most normal human beings cannot sense that yet everyone on here makes a huge deal about it.

Re: wider rims = slow

I decided to weigh my wheels+tires last night just for reference. This is off of my digital bathroom scale so it may not be that accurate:

Stock 18"+Michelin Pilots
Front 225/45/18 - 48.5 lbs
Rear 245/45/18 - 49.5 lbs

Enkei 18" RPF1+Falken FK-451
Front 245/40/18 - 45.0 lbs
Rear 275/40/18 - 48.6 lbs

Happen to have Stock 17"+Bridgestone Potenza RE92A:
Front 225/50/17 - 48.8 lbs
Rear 235/50/17 - 49 lbs

I'm not sure why the 17's are so heavy.

Looks like the tire weight evens it out on the Enkei's. Anyway, the wheels look good, I just need to wait on the centercaps (which are on back order).

Re: wider rims = slow

Hooby,
I cannot sense a .5 second difference on a 1/4 mile, but I can sense when I'm one car length ahead of someone that I'm dragging.

Like someone else said, it just depends on what your mission is. If you're dragging, its a huge difference. If you're not, then it's not. If you define your mission first, G Nirvana is alot easier to reach. And there's nothing wrong with having a different mission. No hate for those that want looks over .1 seconds from me!

Re: wider rims = slow

i was originally going to get 18 inch volks or nismo's... then i realized tha ti would rather have a little less speed and what (in my opinion) is a lot better looking wheel size. im getting 19 inch volk gt-c's rmc finish. They arent the lightest/smallest/fastest wheel out there, but i think they look damn good and serve my purposes just fine

2004 Black on Black g coupe 6spd.... aluminum pedals, clear corners, z tube, and pop charger. soon to have 19" volk gt-c's and PIAA xtreme whites in the clearance and corners

That's why Porsche Turbo's have such a wide stance in the back. Anyone else want to add?

... but the Porsche GT racing team with the GT3 uses an 18" magnesium BBS wheel. It is super light, cast, and at ~$1500 a piece they crack the rims hitting curbs on a regular basis. My buddy is checking into the tire sizes that they use at the next race. (Last race he had to help change the tires/wheels during pitting due to someone being sick, normally he's one of the race strategists on the Alex Job Racing Team).

I tried to get a set of Magnesium Wheels from him, the only ones he can get me are the cracked ones (J/K).

Rumor has it that next season they are switching to a forged magnesium wheel.
