Aftermarket sways messed up my front shock/strut?

Took my car in for service today for a noise I was having on the left front side of the car. Thinking maybe it was the hotchkis sways I installed, I jacked the car up last night to check things out before I took it to the dealer. The bar wasn't loose, and didn't need to lubed. Anyways, the service guy drove my car around and said I probably have a bad shock/strut. Can sways cause damage to this? I was under the impression they couldn't, even if they do shift around.

Also, the service dept said they would warranty whatever's wrong unless it absolutely was due to the hotchkis sways. Of course, this might also be just the chance I was waiting for to get '04 350z springs and aftermarket shocks.

The sway bar's are not related to the cause in any way, shut down any discussion a matter a factly if the dealer goes their.
How many miles are on the car?

That's what I figured. Just wanted to make sure. Aparently it was just a loose bolt.

Re: Aftermarket sways messed up my front shock/strut?

Hey! i have been having the same problem for a week. I thought it was the sway bar too. I checked and it was secure. I am clueless. Can it be my shock? I doubt it, car has only 10,000 miles. I did lower the car with eibachs. However i still doubt it cause i dont drive my car aggressively at all.
My noise is coming from the right front.

wont your warranty be voided for the shocks if it was caused by the eibach springs?

Re: Aftermarket sways messed up my front shock/strut?

possibly because the stock shocks are designed to work at a particular height. lower that may cause a strain on the shock that it's not designed for. just my thoughts

Re: Aftermarket sways messed up my front shock/strut?

Yes, they would. Shocks would be voided. Still doesnt make much sense.. i have less than a 1,000 on these springs. A new shock still shouldnt go bad. My friend doesnt think its the problem thou because the car doesnt handle wierd.....it handles just find except during those moments.
If it were a bad shock it should be squishy all the time.... and the noise and viberation should occur all the time. I dunno, thats what i thought.
Right now it happens when i hit big bumps or when i pull into the little dip b4 my driveway ( wheel turned sharply and rolling the wheels barlely)

Re: Aftermarket sways messed up my front shock/strut?

I had the same problem, the dealer won't fix that because of the fact that I have aftermarket stuff on. Too bad, I took it to my friends shop and they fixed the problem for about $200. It sounds like an clicking noise right? Something was loose. Anyways the problem is fixed now and I am happy. I think it was because of the springs.

Thanks,

Chris

It sounded like your spring spacer is not installed/secure properly since it doesn't effect your ride. I had this issue before when I lower my BMW 530i.

Re: Aftermarket sways messed up my front shock/strut?

It was the front left linkage 17mm bolt that attaches to the sway bar. This is something I installed myself, with the car jacked up on stands, not on ramps. I have a feeling I wasn't able to tighten the bolt all the way with the car jacked up and it not being a neutral position.

I only took it to the dealer because I was going in for service anyway. Figured it would be easier for them to look at and fix, in case it was a shock. They didn't charge me extra to tighten a bolt.

Re: Aftermarket sways messed up my front shock/strut?

Check your front spring and see if the spring is sitting properly on it's rubber perch. It might be sitting in a wrong way this can cause a rattle if it's not installed properly. This is yet again another proof why eibach suspension products suck. Not only me but I know a lot of people that had a lot bad experiences with this spring. Then there is a co worker of mine that never had problems with it so he always buys it. Goodluck in finding the problem in your car I hope I'm wrong about the springs.

Re: Aftermarket sways messed up my front shock/strut?

Thanks everybody... I fixed the problem. After about 10 days of annoying rattle. Like i suspected originally it had something to do with the sway bar. I checked it fairly well the 1st day i heard/felt the rattle. Everything checked out ok.
2day i looked again.... this time it was obvious, may have well had a red flag. It was the sway bar link. The nut had almost loosened all the way off. I dodge a bullet, almost lost my nut and bolt.
Apparently the shop that installed my springs didnt tighten that bolt. It was the bolt that attaches the link to the control arm.
So, i know it was the shop.... i didnt touch that bolt when i installed my swaybars..... they must have touched it when they put in my springs.... i really doubt the problem is due to assembley line.
Whew! it is fixed so relieved and happy.

Ducatidam,

Sorry that I didn't mentioned that with the bolt. It was loose too. I think it was from the front or rear axel. Jut like I thought in first place. Anyways this irritating sound has been fixed. I am so happynow, because I"ve been driving around with that clicking noise one full month.
