Can stock wheels be spray painted?

Hi all. After a winter of not washing the car the wheels have that wonderful pitting on the backs from the brake dust. I have used a wire brush to remove the gunk but am down to the bare aluminum. I want to paint the backs of the wheels black. Can this be done and will it stick? If so, how?

Thanks!

Nothing on a G should be "spray painted".

Yes anything can be spray painted, most of the work is in preparing the surface. Thoroughly clean, light sanding, wash, let dry, prime then paint. Make sure you mask off the areas that you do not want painted. If we dont spray paint how else will we do it with a brush? I have done my wheels and you can hardly tell the difference, only because of the paint.

Take the wheels to a professional and have them powder coated. Much more durable, you have your choice of colors, and they will look great. Wire brushing is not the recommended cleaning method for the surface of alloy wheels. Winter or not, they should be kept clean and waxed to protect the surface. The best bet bet would proably be beater wheels for the winter with snow tires mounted on them.

i would second the powdercoat. very durable, and looks great.

your wheels should be cared for like the finish on your car, however. i can't imagine you would take a wire brush to your hood...or at least i hope not.

Let me restate again. These are the insides, behinds the front faces of the wheels, the walls, etc. Not the fronts of the wheels. How do you propose to get the brake gunk off then?
I am not going to spend the money on powercoating. They will remove the gunk themselves with an abbrasive first as well.

To the comment about "a G should never be painted"
Please don't waste space or oxygen responding with useless words. The G, as you call it is just a car, one of THOUSANDS. Its just steel and aluminum. It is not a Ferrari, not a Formula 1 car, no the Mona Lisa, not the Crown Jewels, not a priceless antique. It is just a Nissan.

Thanks for the help I was looking for DobbieDoo.

Then go ahead and spray paint your Nissan. You may not think very highly of your car, but I do of mine. I work very hard in order to afford a nice car, so it means something to me. And I don't appreciate you replying that I waste space and oxygen.

Perhaps you can spray paint it with a cool "homeboy" color, like gold. And next you can get some tuck and roll velour interior to match along with a weeble wobble dashboard Jesus.

Do not spray paint a G unless you want to make it a "Vato-mobile."

No problem outdoors, the problem with people is they dont take the time to read and understand the question. We all have a right to an opinion. I also did the face of the rims and with wheel performance paint they came out nice, like I said preparation.

What does spray painting the back of a rim have to do with what race you are? how is that going to turn it into a "vato-mobile"? He's not talking about spray painting the entire exterior of his car. just the back of the rims, which nobody even SEES.
You can even spray paint the FRONT of the rim and have it look just as good if not better than powdercoating. I know from experience. the rims i and some friends had powdercoated wound up chipped to hell and back and we couldn't even do any touch-up because you've got to sandblast the whole rim back down to bare metal and re-powdercoat it. if you've got any finish on your rims that isn't polished or machined, guess what? it was spray painted.
As long as the area he doesn't want painted gets masked off, there is nothing wrong with protecting the rear of the rims with a coat of spray paint.
