Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
Test drove the 5AT Sedan today in both just the plain Premium package, and one with the Sport Tuned Suspension option. Didn't seem to make a lot of a difference with body roll, but was noticably stiffer.
Still thinking about whether or not I should take a harder look at this option. I do like the 5-spoke wheels and upgraded tires.
Any thoughts from folks who made the decision one way or another? I'm not going to be racing it, and want my daily driver to be as comfortable as possible...so I guess I'm leaning towards skipping the option.
Edited by PaulR on 06/17/04 03:23 PM.

Re: Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
A couple of issues with the sport suspension, one I believe it comes with summer tires so if you live in a colder climate, you'll need to buy 4 snow tires. Without the summer tires, you could get away with just two snows, unless you live in a snow belt. Two, if you found it too stiff during test drive, you would not like it in your daily commute. I drove the sport suspension also and decided it's not my cup of tea.

I find SS to be more comfortable than the loaner without. I dont like the extra bounce - the firmer feeling is better than getting bounced around and feels more rigid...FWIW

Re: Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
It certainly is nice of Infiniti to offer both suspension choices. What to get centers on wanting a softer ride, and the color of the console trim. The non sport delivers that softer ride, but it uses shocks that are a bit underdampned to get that result and softer springs. On poor road surfaces the non sports underdampning can cause the suspenion to become very flustered whereas the sport deals with the same condition with a little more firmness, but controlled manner. Non sports exhibit more brake dive and squat experiencing more weight transfer issues. It is also less for giving at the limit of adheasion vs the sport suspended car. Again, it depends on what your looking for, a softer ride or firmer.

Re: Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
I usually don't drive too crazy, especially on bad roads - so I like the standard suspension just fine. I have taken my G out on some extremely curvy mountain roads and had tons of fun even with the non-sport. I was reigning it in before the suspension was. : )
In my day to day driving (the type of driving I do most by far) I am on some pretty lousy roads. I think the added stiffness of the sport would have been a bad choice for me. It would have meant being less comfortable 95% of the time for a slight performance edge the other 5% of the time. Not worth it to me, YMMV.
Sport package also came with the silver center console and door handles, and I didn't like that look. Again,YMMV. I suspect that whatever you get you will adjust to it and be happy. I hope so anyway. : )

Re: Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
The Sport was way too soft for me, I swapped it out for a Z suspension within a month of having my G...but it's still not firm enough.

Hey_Ya, not sure if you have invested in sway bars yet. If you are seeking an even firmer ride that the Z suspension can't provide, invest into some sways if you have not done so already.

Re: Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
Ah, thanks for the suggestion. That was my next planned mod before I got a nice cell phone sized dent in my rear quarter panel this morning (including free chipped paint!) which I'm guessing will cost ~$500 or so to fix...hopefully not more.
But sways won't help with the (can't think of proper term) car rocking back and forth when I accelerate/decelerate respectively? Right? They just help with the body roll?

Re: Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
I have the Premium as well. Not much difference in handling compared with the Sport IMO. Stiffer ride though, and I didn't like the spoiler and the 'Titanium' trim.
If you want better handling, probably better to go aftermarket.

Re: Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
The sport suspension is too soft for my likes but much better than the non-sport IMO. I drove both and you can tell a difference at a higher speed with bounciness. I even got aftermarket springs and still dont think its stiff enough and the body roll is gone. I guess im truely looking for sports car handling

I also think aftermarket is the way to go. However sport shocks will be better match for aftermarket springs if you want "on-a-budget" upgrade. Non sport shocks don't have enough rebound to deal with increased spring rates. And this is the last thing you want to have: soft shocks on hard springs. Feels like a boat in wide turns and bumpy on uneven surface.

Re: Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
Both suspension's differ in shock stiffness and spring stiffness, this is felt as a smoother ride and poorer suspension control. Non sports have more dive and squat and have poor at the limit behavor where the limit is greated with oversteer that only abates by scrubbing off speed. My driving impressions on the non sport come from purposely getting a non sport loaner and testing it like a journalist would. The sport suspension is not the end all(way to soft for me), but it does deserve it's title of sport over the non sport.

Re: Sedan: Sport Tuned Suspension
What year is your "G", PotomacG ? Mines an '04 6MT Sedan purchased March, 2004 (with standard Sport Suspension, like all 6MT's), and the tires are Goodyear Eagle GS-D's, which are the "summer" tires. These same tires were on every "sport suspension" packaged car on the lot, Sedans, Coupes, 5AT's, 6MT's, - no matter.
Also, all the brochures and the corporate website references these same (Goodyear GS-D) "summer" tires as standard with Sport Package.
