He turns VDC off when drifting. Leaves VDC on for daily driving. Looks like a mis-communication.

I don't think running different brands or even different tread patterns will be an issue. But you probably don't want to have a big difference between the rubber compound (performance category) of the two. As an extreme example, you wouldn't want to run max performance summer tires on one end and regular passenger all-seasons on the other. You wouldn't notice it during normal, easy driving, but in spirited driving and especially in an emergency maneuver, having different levels of grip on either end of the car will cause unpredictable results.

see: https://g35driver.com/forums/brakes-...acting-up.html

the problem is gone now, i think it was more because i had new tires in the rear and semi-old tires in the front. now that the rear wear is catchin up it doesn't go off anymore.

for daily driving its not dangerous at all, and you won't know the difference.
if you track your car or pull very hard corners (to the point where you are sliding and VDC is off) you'd feel which tires have stronger grip and the car might handle funny (since the front or rear may be gripping more), but if you're a good drive you'd know how to correct it and adjust your driving style, but i don't suggest it on the track since the car doesn't seem to slide sidewards evenly.

I dont see what that has to do w him having different tires.. You seem to be confused.
Your original post was short and ambiguous. It seemed to imply that your buddy had no problems running 2 different tires while drifting with the VDC off, which wouldn't be applicable to this discussion. Or it was just late when I read it

This should be pretty obvious but at the limits, emergency use or even heavy heavy rain different tires can cause a issue.

You don't want 2 different types of traction in the above situations

Would it work? probably. Is it ideal? No. Why one would compromise the handling of the car with two different tire brands is beyond me.

Then again, running 4 lug nuts vs 5 is probably okay also.

I've done it before, not a big deal for street driving. Track conditions you need 100% but I don't ever push my car that hard on the street.
