18,s waste?

ok money is the not the issue here. my question to all, since i just bought my coupe 3 nights ago is this? I want to get some Volks on it, i was gonna do 18's because i have the old skool mentality, "the bigger you go, the slower you go" but if i do go 18 is that waste, will it look wak.what do you all think??

Re: 18,s waste?

18s look fine but you are right in the bigger is slower. You need to got light weight and Volk is an excellent choice but not the only choice. If you can keep the over all dimension of the 18s close to the 17s you'll be fine. Good idea to think it all out before you dump and bunch of money into something that slows you down-unless you really want a certain rim or look.

Re: 18,s waste?

The way I look at it~ Stock rims are around 24.5lbs each. Good aftermarket forged rims weights in at around 10lb for the 19" and 18-19lbs for the 18". Either way you are already shaving off some weight, a pound or two shouldn't matter that much unless these are your drag wheels.

Most of us bought the G35C because of its combination of styling and performance. I think styling is just as important as the added performance benefit~ so if I were you, I'd go with the 19" for sure. Don't forget, 2005 G35C will come with forged 19" wheels.

Re: 18,s waste?

Buy rims that undercut the oem rim weight and you can beat the system. My rim and tire combo weights 4lbs LESS per corner then the oem combo. Yes it's better to have the rotaional weight closer to the rim centerline (so I've heard), but my unsprung weight is less nevertheless.

Re: 18,s waste?

i was considering 18 inch volks, but i dont want to do suspension yet (or maybe not at all), so i decided that i am going to sacrafice some performance gains for over styling of my vehicle. I looked at it like this.. im not going to be tracking my g, and if i lose a race to a transam or something because of my wheel size.... so be it... at least i looked damn good when i lost

Re: 18,s waste?

Depends on what you want / like.....
I was not going to sacrifice ride quality for looks...
I just ordered Volk GT-U's in 18" - 9f & 10r...

Re: 18,s waste?

18's don't sacrafice ride quality much at all, I've been back and forth on both sizes and the 18's give up little in ride quality. And I have higher performance rubber with the usual stiff sidewalls. Biggest change is when I recently installed modifed (firmer) spring seat bushings.

Agreed.....but

I think we are comparing 18's to 19's ....
not 17"s to 18"s

Re: 18,s waste?

The best looking wheels I've seen are Lowrider's Nismo 18" wheels he put on his ride.

They don't look whack to me because he's obviously thought through what he wanted and executed on his plan beautifully. He ended up with an 18 pound wheel that will accept his tire pressure monitor, that looks nice, easy to clean, doesn't sacrifice ride quality, yet still gives him a wider tire with a lower aspect ratio.

To me, that doesn't look whack. What doesn't look whack to you or some others may vary. You need to decide who you want it to not look whack for, because beauty is in the eye.....

I think aftermarket 18's will be too small for the G35, IMO. If you're gonna get wheels, at least 19's. If not, stick with ur factory 18's.

Alright, once again someone said the magic phrase, " money is not an issue" So hear goes my answer. Get The forged Volks in Magnesium...... and if you want you can go with the 19's and not worry about additional weight. Hell, they should weigh less than any 18's out there. But u may stilll be worried the extra inch will slow u down..... If that is the case go with 18's.... get the Mag's in 18's...... u can rest assured u shed a lot of rotating weight.

Re: 18,s waste?

It's a bunch of trade offs. You can't have the perfect tire to drag in at the same time you have the perfect tire to auto cross in. For turning, you want low aspect ratio and low weight. For drag you want low weight and tires to hook up. Our car comes equipped already for a good compromise. If you want to corner better, go 19", but you'll have more weight towards the perimeter (bad), if you want to drag go to 17"s or 16"s. You have to pick your poison.

To say that one should keep their 18"s if they aren't going to a 19" is ridiculous. I'm sticking with 18"s because they make the compromises I am looking for in what I want to do with the car. By going to a 19 pound 18" from a 24.5 pound 18" I'm effectively lowering the weight of my car by 100 pounds.
