255/40-18 on Stock 18's

Hey,

I started a thread over in the Sedan section about the Coupe wheels I have for my Sedan, but thought I'd ask here as well.

Is anyone running 255/40-18's on their stock 18x8's? If so, how's the fit, how's the ride, any concerns about squeezing it on to an 8" wheel? I have an AWD and would like to run 225/45-18 in the front and 255/40-18 in the rear so the tires are close to each other in diameter (both are about 1% smaller than stock).

And let's keep this about the 255's. I've weighed the merits of going with the same size tire all around, and each size has a drawback that doesn't exist with the setup above. (225's are too small in the rear, 245's are too big in the front, 235's have a crappy tire selection).

you should be fine with 255/40/18

I run a 255/40/19 on my coupe, I don't notice any noticeable gains specifically from the width (huge difference switching from bridgestone to falken) but certainly the fitment and look is greatly improved. Should be fine as the rim width is the same with stock 18's and 19's.

Also...for front I would suggest 245, as leaving them 225 makes you a little more prone to understeer. I initially was running 255 rear and 225 front and did notice better balance and less undertsteer when I went to 245. Again though, could just be the upgraded tire and not necessarily the width.

But it looks better so who cares.

just FYI... anything over a 4mm will throw off your AWD once you get to a speed above 40mph for 5 mins. its front the FSM and ask me how i know..... 225/45 and 265/40 pissed off my car.

your 225/45 front, 255/40 rear setup is about 1.5mm off so i think you should be good to go. 255 on a 8 inch wheel is only pushing it a hairline. my 265 is recommended for a 9 in wheel but it fits on my 8.5 very nicely, not stretched or anything crazy. I say DO it and let me know how that turns on because i might run that as well. if 255's are cheaper then 265's

I'd like to run 245/45's all around, but the Coupe 18's on a Sedan really push that 245 out on the front. It's outside the wheel well. I'm not so much worried about rubbing (I'm not dropped) but it doesn't look that good and I can picture water flying up beside my car when it's raining.

I'll have good rubber so I'm not worried about understeer (Nitto Invo or Bridgestone RE760 Sport). Besides, this car tends to oversteer when pushed to the limit anyway. A little more rubber in the back should help with that (not that I push it that hard in the corners.)

True enough, I sold my buddy with an 03 sedan my old winter setup which would have needed 30/35mm spacers to be flush on my coupe and they are t-ight on his car. You have pics?

No pics with the 245's in the front. I bought a set of Coupe wheels with some pretty worn Yoko ES100's and I was really anxious to put them on and try it out. But I forgot the tires were staggered, so without thinking I put the 245's on the front and the 225's on the back and drove it. I noticed how far out the fronts were and then realized my mistake. I swapped them but didn't get pics with the biggies on the front, but I do remember them being outside the wheel wells.

Sedan wheels have a +45 offset, so the +30 from the Coupe 18x8's really moves everything outward. The 225 front, 245 rear is almost perfectly flush with the side of the car, and looks really good. For a non-AWD it's really a great setup. Had I known I was going to have this kind of trouble figuring out the tire setup I don't think I would have purchased them. I would have looked for Sedan 18's or maybe something from the M. But if I get the tires figured out I'll be happy because I do like the look and offset of these wheels.

Update: I finally have some pictures with the 245/45-18's front and back. Well, at least on one side. I moved the left rear to the right front in order to see how it looked, i.e. is it sticking out too far. And the verdict is a resounding NO!!! This really changes my tire selection mightily. I'm definitely getting 245/45-18's unless I somehow stumble upon a great deal for some Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus in 235/45-18.

Uhh, apologies about the messy garage. It's been very windy, and I'm cleaning out my basement.

IMO they are definitely sticking out too far. Ballon tires FTL! Get 225/45 front and 245/40 rear. Here are some recent pics of mine:

I can't run that setup, I have AWD. Tires aren't close enough to each other in diameter. According to the FSM, tires need to be within 4mm of each other, that's why they mention rotating tires regularly and replacing all 4 at the same time. Your setup is about 6.5mm different from each other. Besides, I think the 225/45's are already look too small, and the 245/40 is even smaller than that.

I'd honestly put more money up for 235/45 tires or 225/45's all around then because the 245's up front really look horrible imo.

My first choice is to put 235/45's all around, but the Michelins are going to cost $950. I could put on one of several cheaper tires (Toyo Proxes 4, Kumho SPT, Yoko Avid W4S, Hankook Ventus V4) for around $650-$700, but I have issues with each of these choices. I want a better tire!

And I can get a better tire with the 245/45's for around $700-$750. Bridgestone RE760 Sport, Nitto Invo, even a Goodyear Eagle GT is better than the ones above. Or I could spend $900+ and have a choice between the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus or the Bridgestone RE960A Pole Positions.

225/45 is not an option. Way too wimpy looking. I don't like the stretched look at all, and would only have tolerated them if I was putting 255/40's on the back. But I appreciate your feedback.

looks nice, i didn't take a good look but i like it. 225/45 is not a stretch look but its close.

you should drive around with the 245/45 for a day and see how you like the feel. I didn't realize how much i loved my 265/40 untill a week later when i was walking up to the car.

245 on a 8' rim should be near its max that the rim can take. Plus tire options makes a HUGE difference. I think i'm going to run that.

I'd love to be able to drive on them, but the pics are deceiving. I have 2 245/45's on the passenger side that you can see (one is mounted backwards), but I have a 225/45-18 on the driver's front, and one of my winter 225/55-17's on the driver's rear. I just did this to see what it looked like with both on one side. I drove it about 5 feet back and 5 feet forward to unscrub the tires after I lowered it off the jack. Unless I find a steal on some 235/45's I like (Michelins), I'm going to go this route with 245/45's all around. I like a fatter tire on my car.

Thanks for the feedback.
