aren't you guys worried about understeering even more with more stagger? the stock z's and g's have under 1 inch of stagger factory. my understanding was that such a high stagger is meant for rear-engined cars (like 911s) and for very very powerful rwd cars (450whp+)... even then doesn't it make sense to widen the front too?

with the 245/275 setup, you're only adding 1 cm more width than the standard 225/245 18" specs. That's not a lot.

In terms of the rear wheel drive cars, I believe the 911 turbo uses 225's in front and 295's in the rear. That's what you call stagger.

I actually plan on going with 255/35 in the front and can't decide whether to go with 275's again in the rear (reduce stagger) or with 285's (to reduce tire stretch on the 10.5" wheel.)

Hi Rampart,
Yeah, what you suspect is right... at least in my case.
Can't speak for others but for me, it's an attempt to get a good-looking 19" wheel that can deliver the looks without sacrificing the performance too much. Or even better -- that could take performance up a notch compared to stock and still look great.

Like I said, for the track I'll probably use dedicated 18 or 17" ultralight wheels that are not so wide, not so staggered and can give me a neutral setup with less fuss.

I'm more than happy with the current wheels for the street. Perfect balance between looks/style and performance, IMO.

I may be wrong but wouldn't offset have to do more with "stagger"? Suppose you do have 245 in front and 285 in rear, but can you get by with a higher offset in rear, such as 35 and like a 20 up front and have the car neutral? It may not look as nice though.

Neutrality has more to do with setting up the car so that both front and rear break traction at about the same time, so stagger is a factor but not the factor.

Here are a list of ways I could remedy my understeer:

Raise front tire pressure.
Lower rear tire pressure.
Lower both front and rear tire pressures equally.
Wider front tires.
Narrower rear tires.
Use softer front tire compound.
Use harder rear compound.

Soften front shocks/ springs.
Stiffen rear shocks/ springs.
Soften front sway.
Stiffen rear sway.

Widen front track (spacers on front).
Narrower rear track (decrease stagger).
More front toe out.
More rear toe in.
Increase front negative camber.
Decrease rear negative camber.
Increase front and rear negative camber equally.
Increase positive caster.

Lighten front of vehicle.
Add weight to rear of vehicle.
(that is, move weight rearward if possible)**
Lower front end.
Raise rear end.
Increase front wing downforce (front lip) -- only works at high speeds though...

**by removing my spare tire and tools, although I've improved acceleration, I've changed the balance more towards understeer.
