255/45/17 tire on a 17x8 wheel

I know leadfoot has that combination and he says it is just fine and has no sidewall flex issues. Looked up several 255/45/17 tires on the manufacturers website and they seem to all have a recommended rim width range of 8"-9" for a 255 tire. My question is if 8" is the minimum recommended width for a 255 tire, will it be okay regarding sidewall flex with just normal tire pressure of 30-33 psi for everyday driving? Will it be okay with a higher tire pressure of lets say 38-40 psi for track days and auto-xing? I'm planning on getting some 17x8 wheels with 255/45/17 Kumho MX tires in the somewhat near future. I will be doing occassional road races and autox's. Just want to make sure I won't have sidewall flex issues because the width of the rim is too narrow even though it is within the recommended range. Thanks.

you will have a little bulging, but it will look good. Plus it will protect your rims abit too. If tirerack has it in their recommended rim width than that is all you need. You can usually fit one size outside that rim width too.

No Problem. This is the smallest recommended rim width for this size tire. Since it's withen Manufacturers specifications, all will be well.

Right, the 8" is the minimum but I believe 8.5" is the recommended. So in terms of going road racing, will the 255 tire on the 8" rim be okay? Or will I have to raise the tire pressure up a bit to keep the sidewall stiff and prevent it from rolling over on the turns? Thanks again.
