getting into auto-x need help with tires
i just went through phase 1 and 2 of evolution performance driving school last week and im hooked onto this stuff. i ran my stock wheels for the training period and it really wore them out. i have 22,000 miles on my car as of now and wilh all those runs on it( about 25 or so) im guessing i must have put on 2 to 3 thousand more miles on them( guessing it might be more). i was thinking of getting dot competition tires to run for the auto-x but im sorta confused about the restrictions on the sizes of the rims i can use( trying to find the lightest) and what kind of tires to get that would fit the wheels. Also do u think i should just stick to my stock set(cuase the season is gonna end soon) for the auto-xing and buy new tires and the snow season( i have a set of snow tires and rims for the winter)
i wanna basically stick to the stock BS class this season and this is the only link that sorta shed some light on the tire and wheel restrictions. www.madisonautocross.com/rules/GCR2004.pdf

Re: getting into auto-x need help with tires
the pdf file shows there are certain restrictions to the 'class' of each vehicle: stock, prepared, modified and race. changing the wheel width and diameter will cause point increment that will bump up the class of your vehicle. say, the stocks are 18x8. you want to run some light 17x9. so far, the changes will include 1 increment for diameter and width.. doesn't seem to matter if you will decrease or increase size. each increment counts for 1 point... you need to stay within 0-2 points of change to stay in the stock class. DOT labeled 'specialty compound tires' (street legal race tires) give a 3 point bump onto your class change... however! the rules do not shed light onto use of different street tires. perhaps you can change your tires without any reference to class change.
i suggest you stick with the stock wheels and possibly better street tires (wider track, stickier compound, lighter and firmer/shorter sidewall), rather than street legal R compound tires. try kumho ecsta mx's or pirelli p-zero neros.. i hear both have really good gripping capabilities without breaking the bank, but their life is short compared to the average street tire.
