A/S Tires for 18" Rims

For those of you who have switched out their Michelin Pilot Sports for A/S tires, which ones did you get? What has your experience been with them? In another 5K miles, I'll be needing 4 new tires. I'm looking at getting some A/S ones and need some recommendations.

Re: A/S Tires for 18" Rims

I got the Michelin Pilot Sport All Seasons. Though my rims haven't arrived yet, so I have no idea how they are. I can get back to you on that.

But in my research, I found 3 tires I considered:

Contintental ContiExtremeContact
Michelin Pilot Sport All Season
Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S.

The Pilots and P-Zeros ranked the highest in terms of performance in the Wet and Dry. I think the Contis edged out the other two in the snow, but just barely. However, according to the reviews on TireRack, there were a bunch of people complaining of low-temperature flat-spotting on the contis.

Re: A/S Tires for 18" Rims

I did alot of research recently on a good A/S to put on 18" rims. I plan on swapping out my pilots for a set of A/S for winter driving (on dedicated wheels). I decided to go with the P Zero Nero M+S tires. Unfortunately the tire needed for the front is on national back order with no due date... oh well.

I also did a lot of research on this since I got my Nismo rims. I decided on the Pirelli's based on price and performance. The only downside is the long wait due to the national backorder. Luckily my current tires have plenty of tread left so I'm going to wait it out rather than get something else. Last I heard 12-14 weeks wait for the 245/40/18's.

I did a search for the Pirellis on tirerack, but got nothing. Is the size on back order 225/45/18? Do they come in a 245/40/18 size? That's the size I'm going to go with on the fronts.

Whoops, didn't read that last sentence. Do they sell the Pirellis on Tirerack? I was actually going to go with the Continentals, but now, I'm having second thoughts. For the price of the Michelin A/S tires, I might as well just get another set of Pilot Sports.

Don't know about sizes other than 245/40/18 and 275/40/18 (they have this one in stock). I ordered from TireRack.com

I don't think anyone makes a 225/45-18 except for OEM. But the PZero-Nero comes in 245/40-18. I heard they are on national back order tho...

Even though the Pilot Sports and Pilot Sports A/S are about the same price, the A/S have a tread wear rating of something like 400. (Take that with a grain of salt). For me, I opted for the A/S, because even though it doesn't really snow all that much, except for maybe 3 days out of the year. It does get below 50 degrees for a good chunk of the year.

Re: A/S Tires for 18" Rims

Forgive me, but I'm a little noobish when it comes to tires.

So when buying A/S tires for the 18 inch wheels, you have to buy a different size (40 instead of 45). I know that this is the sidewall height of the tire.

Are there any negatives to doing this? Changing the sidwall height of a tire changes the overall diameter of the tire+wheel. Does it mess up the speedometer? I assume I'm missing something since so many people are doing it.

I too would want to put A/S tires as my everyday tire set if I purchased the coupe with stock 18s.

Re: A/S Tires for 18" Rims

We are looking at the different size because when dealing with tire sizes it is all about diameter. The tires are a different in size (45 vs 40) but the issue is keeping the diameter the same. Check out tirerack.com and read their knowledge base articles. They are really informative and answered my questions on offset :-) It's always better to self educate! THis way you don't have to read people slamming you for not using the search button. He-he.
