Inner Tire Wear and Flipping Tire Sides
Inner Tire Wear and Flipping Tire Sides
Hello all and Happy 4th of July! I recently just noticed that my inner rear tires (275/30/20) are worn down heavily. I saw this when I was doing my differential fluid change. The middle and outer edge of the tire have a great deal of thread left on them. I have put about 17k miles on these tires. My tires sound pretty noisey but after making the camber more positive with an alignment (1.5 months ago) the noise went down maybe 50%. Am I able to unmount the rear tires and flip the sides so I can leave the worn out thread towards the outer edge? Or should I purchase a new set of rear tires? I wonder if I can get another 5k miles out of these tires with flipping them before I put the OEM wheels on for the winter. Thanks for your help.
I have heard stories of stretching belts and safety issues when flipping worn tires like you have described. I would consult with your local tire shop for advice before flipping. I know you just want to stretch a buck and I can't blame you, but safety first.

They probably think u are messing with them if u are asking them to flip your tires.. lol Any tire shop can take the tires off and remount them..
I think they are saying no because they see it as a liability. I get an alignment done every 4 months (I have an alignment plan), but my tires are showing slight wear after about 15k miles. I'm just trying to get the most out of them.
It is a liability and safety issue. Shops are not allowed to mount tires under a certain thread depth. 2/32 of an inch is the minimum allowed tread depth in almost all states. If a shop mounts a tire below that depth, they are liable. Most chain shops will not do it. Best bet is to try a smaller local shop.
