Need help choosing tires. Can I use a different tire height/width than is recommended?

Hey all,

I just got a flat today and the rest of my tires are close to being finished off, so I'm just going to replace all 4. I have a 2005 G35 Coupe and I've been driving on the Sumitomo HTR Z III's and they lasted me about 25k miles. I'd like to get something around the same price (max $150 per tire) but might be willing to sacrifice a little bit of performance for a bit more longevity. I love the ZIII's and how sticky they are, but would like to get more than 25k miles out of my next tires. The trouble is that it's a little tough to find tires in the 235/50R17 model, which is what is recommended for my car. The shop I went to today suggested that I get 245/45R17's, which he said will be absolutely fine to use in my car. I don't know enough about it to know if he was BS'ing me or not. Any advice on this matter?

Further, he suggested I get the Sumitomo Tour Plus LSW tires, which he said don't perform quite as well but will last at least 50k miles. Does anybody have any feedback about these tires, or do you have any tires that you would recommend over these that will have decent performance/handling but also last a good bit longer than 25k miles?

Thanks in advance.

@Gthing: Gotcha. And running 245/45's wont negatively impact anything (safety, longevity, mileage, etc?). Also, for the front tires that are normally 225/50R17's, I'm assuming those would go to 235/45R17's?

@jersey: do you know anything about the Tour Plus LSW's that he recommended? Or do you have any suggestions for a tire around the $150 mark that will at least last a little longer than the ZIII's but still have decent performance?

I like my kumhos but that's just me. Some people say they're "loud" but I don't notice it.

Try the Bridgestone Potenza RE760's. I believe they're around $160 each and are an awesome tire for the price. They seem to last a long time and handle/drive very well.

Tirerack.com has good info on tire ratings & have a best seller tab that may help. I have a g35c as well but I have sacrificed performance for (summer tires) and went with all seasons. It depends in your driving habits also, are you using this for fun spirited drives? Daily diver? Will you see snow, or have a separate winter setup?

For me I only use it for local commutes and this is my daily. I've found the continental dws tires are a good buy. Keep in mind this tire is a rounded firewall tire, it will not give you as much protection to a curb if you street park often. I recently obtained a full set of the newer continental dws Eco for my wife's car. It's suppose to out perform the original dws that I have since it's an "Eco" tire meaning less rolling resistance and liger treadlife. If you do not see any winter conditions then the regular, cheaper $ DW model will be fine. (Dry,wet, snow)
