im looking at replacement rotors and brake pads. As far as pads i want ones that wont make as much dust and for rotors should i get slotted or crossdrilled. can anyone point me to a site that would carry these things?

hawk hps are low dust but still good stopping power.
I would go with the cross drilled...looks more aggressive. or slotted crossdrilled would look good.

sorry don't know the sites off hand. check ebay.

Have the same problem....any stores in the Toronto area selling these parts...the price of the stock parts at the dealership is ridiculous.

has nothing to do w/ mileage but wear, some drivers ride the brakes which leads to premature wear on pads others rarely use brakes. IMO instead of turning rotors I simply replace them, i dont like the practice of turning them. But if you have deep grooves/gashes in your rotors (surface should be smooth) from procrastinated brake pad change...then you prob. need to change your rotors.

So when do you know that you need to change your brakes? When they start making noises? Or should you visually check them yourself?

normally i perform brake pad/rotor changes myself so anytime I change the pads i inspect the rotors. normally you can tell when your rotors need to be changed an example is you can somewhat feel the brake pedal isnt smooth or you can actually feel a vibration in the pedal or hear the intermittent grinding noises. From the time I hear brake squeak I try not to let more than a week pass before I check them out. Brake pads are like $30-100 parts that can be replaced real easy, rotors are ALOT more expensive and so changing your pads ASAP is a preventive measure for future costly repairs. However on our G's for some reason the rotors seem to wear faster than other cars I have seen, hence all the posts about people replacing them. Previous cars Ive owned I have only had to change the rotors after about 50k miles if at all, again depending on the driver. Brake pads I have had to swap/chage about every 10-15k miles on previous autos, again based on driver. You can remove your tire and visually inspect the rotors (cracks, grooves, uneven wear lines in the rotor- rotors should be smooth and even) and you can measure the rotor for wear and determine if it needs replacing as well. below is a tool you can use to measure rotor/drum wear...its $$ but for a mechanic its an investment...

If you are in the Toronto area you can get good prices on Brembo brake parts (rotor, pads) for the 6MT at GT Performance in Woodbridge.
