Caliper placement - any difference in performance?

Some cars have the brake caliper mounted on the rear side of the rotor (i.e., looking flush at the wheel, the caliper is on the left. Other cars have the calipers mounted on the front side of the rotor (i.e., looking flush at the wheel, the caliper is on the right).

Is there any difference in performance based upon caliper location?
