need help on flat repair...

Hey guys,

Got a flat on my rear tire. It's a fat screw that punctured 3.5" away from the side wall of the tire. My car has only 7000 miles on it. Tires have a lot of thread. Don't want to buy a new one if I can get it repaired. Now, a tire shop said they wont repair it cause its to close to the side, making that area a weak point and it would just pop one day. Is that true? or they just want me to buy a new tire.
I personally repaired a few tire's in my life in the same area, near the side wall, but not performance tires. So my question is, would it be safe to do if I find a shop that will repair it? thanks in advance guys.

Hey man, I had the same exact problem as you. Fortunately I bought an extra warranty that covered my tires and rims and I was able to get it replaced through warranty. Anyways, before I could get it through warranty, they wanted me to try to get it fixed. I went to Mr.Tire and asked them if they could fix it. First they tried to plug it, but the air was still leaking out since the hole was too big. Next they said that they would attempt to patch the tire, but since the hole was on the side of the tire, the patch too gave out after a day. From what I've learned, a hole in the side of the tire cannot be repaired. It can be "temporarily" fixed, but it will come back. Go and replace the tire. They're a bit expensive though.. that one tire cost me 409.16 labor included. Thankfully, the warranty will reimburse me. Good luck on it bro.

3.5" away from the side wall would put it dead smack in the center of the tread. What am I missing here? That would definitely be repairable. The correct way is to plug AND patch. See this link: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=77

Sounds like it can be fixed; I would never use a plug though. The best way to fix tires is to dismount them from the rim and patch it from the inside......just like a bicycle tire.
