OEM 19's rusting! Help!
 

My OEM 19's are starting to rust on the inner part of the rim! Has anyone else ever ran into this problem? If so what did you do and secondly do you think Infiniti will replace the wheels?

My car originally came with the OEM 18's and I bought the 19's from another site member. Will they warranty that if my car didn't originally come with those wheels?

Are you sure it's not just discoloration from brake dust? The wheels are aluminum. Uhh, I don't think aluminum can rust. Am I missing something?

I'm not to sure... Yesterday I washed the car and the rims. I washed the insides of each wheel as well and if it were discoloration from brake dust it should have gone away right?

I have a small amt of that too on the fronts. It does seem like from brake dusts??? :confused:

I don't know about the wheels, but I know that when I wash the car or when the car stands outside overnight in the rain, I have a thin layer of rust accumulates on the rotors. Is it possible that's the same kind of rust you're seeing?

+1 Brake dust. When you're washing your rims, try scrubbing the area in question. It'll come off...I choose not to clean if cuz nobody ever sees it.

Isn't that just bearing grease? Comes out from where the rim attaches to the spindle, right? Stuff is tenacious. If anyone figures out how to wash it off, please let me know.

That is true. Our rims are an alloy (mostly Aluminum from what I can remember reading). Aluminum doesn't rust, doesn't corrode, but it does oxidizes (somewhat), but that is more of a white residue and only on pure aluminum. I have some brake dust on my rims that are kinda brownish so it looks like rust but isn't really. Get some good Rim Cleaner (I use Maguires and it works decent enough) and you'll be ok. What you are really seeing might also be some of the rust dripping off of the brakes and onto the rims. Again, some wheel cleaner will do the trick.

rub away on it with some simple green or dishwasher soap. It's hard work, but people usually don't do it cause no one sees it. Unless you have your car lifted up and people walk underneath it for inspection all the time.

The 19"s are forged aluminum alloy. I think it is painted and clearcoated. In either case, dealer may or may not warranty. I'm not sure what the warranty says regarding OEM pieces purchased from private parties (OEM parts bought from dealers new are covered under your new car warranty, however).

I also get residue on my wheels.It is from the rotors.The inner part of the rotor does not make any contact with the brake pads.So after you was your car,rust does form up quickly on that part of the rotor.Thats why the other day I took off my rotors to paint that inner part with high temp paint sometime this week.This is what I did on my Accord,it works great,no more mess.In the meantime I put my oem rotors back on.

It is actually your rotor rusting up and leaving oxidized iron caked on your 19s... It is not actually your rims. When your rims are in contact with the rotor all the time, it will build up solidified rust onto your rim over time.
