looking for race rims and tires

I went to my first track event and now I'm hooked. After taking my street tires on the track, I realized that I need to use something else. I'm looking for some new wheels and tires, and I've been searching all morning. It was suggested to me that I find the smallest rim that would fit around my brakes to keeps costs down for the race tires. If that's the case, looks aren't important, but weight will be. My other idea was to wrap some race rubber around my stock rims and get new ones for the street.

Any suggestions would be great! If you've got race tires, let me know what they are!

A032R's are a good bang for the buck tire for tracking. go with lightweight 17's because of the tire availibility.

And there a few tire choices based on how serious you want to get. Either the Falken RT-615 at a 200 treadwear or a Nitto NT-01 at a 100.

^ i'd have gone with Gram Lights 57f's instead. you can still find them. rare though because they're 1pc forged @ 14lbs.

I would recommend either 17" or 18" forged rims on R compound tires. 17" are cheaper, but depending on the tires you might get too much unwanted sidewall flex. I would go for a set of Volk CE28N 18" 8.5 front and rear. Run 245/40R18 front and rear. (or 255/40R18 rear) Remember, stagger is great for that muscle car look, but you need to address the understeer of our cars.

Oh yeah, get some sway bars, they are not expensive and make a hella lot of difference on the track.

I'm using a set of Stock G35 18's with the Falken RT-615 245/40-18 and have had great results. They are very fun on the street too.

It's his first track event, there is NO reason to go straight to an R compound tire or forged wheels for that matter.

Find the limit of the car while progressing through classes of tires. Michael Shumacher didn't start in a Ferrari.

Yup, I'm not looking at spending a ton of money right now. Just want to get out there and have some more fun. I like the idea of getting some stock 18s. Seems like a lot of people are selling those.

Chris, what type of wheels are those? and how much? Since you're a site sponsor I'm guessing you're selling those. Please PM me if you prefer not to post prices. And shipping to 90066. Thanks!

They're the MB Motorsports Weapon. I don't know which size you're set on but for an 18x9 +15, you'd be looking at $164 a wheel, with free shipping, of course.

I couldn't disagree more--- The R-compound tire swap is the SINGLE most effective change I've made to my car for the track. Mounted on a set of OEM rims (read : cheap), it allows me to run harder and brake deeper than any other single track mod out there.

I didn't dispute that the tires would be the biggest change that you could make to a track car. Not at all.

You learn the car's handling dynamics better progressing through the lines of tires than just hopping to the top.

How about the stock Z 17s or 18s? Those should fit fine right?

Since the sig is gone, I might as well post up the fact that I'm driving a 2005 Coupe 6MT, so no brembos.

The stock dimensions or the stock wheels?

Some prefer the bigger wheel to alleviate the sidewall roll.

The stock wheels off a Z. Looks like I can get a set of those for ~300.
