Tire Pressure Sensor Question

Prolly a dumb question... BUT here goes anyways.

I just switched out my OEM wheels with winter wheels/tires. I've never seen the tire pressure sensors on my OEM wheels (assuming they are inside the wheel/tire space), but I noticed that the tire pressure sensor light comes on with my new wheels. Is this normal? Does the car give up if it can't talk to them or will the light stay on indefinitely until I switch my wheels back?

Thx.
