Snow Cables Anyone?

I've read a couple dozen posts on snow-chains and everyone seems to agree that purchasing snow tires and crappy rims is the best way to go.

I live in the SF Bay Area and love heading up to Tahoe to ski and snowboard a few times each season. The problem is, I live in an apartment and there is no where to store an extra set of tires when they're not in use. (Plus getting them for a few trips to Tahoe each season seems like a waste of money.)

Has anyone tried "snow cables"? They seem to be less likely to mess up the wheel wells than big a$$ snow chains.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
