225/45/18 or 245/45/18 on a Sedan?

I have decided on 18's, but I am undecided about tire size after much research. I am looking at 18x8's with Bridgestone S03's. My thoughts:

1. 225/45/18 all around. Benefits are ability to rotate the tires, smaller diameter equals slightly better gearing and no rub or fit issues, TireRack recommends. Drawbacks are the shorter tire diameter on rears may introduce speedometer error, the back tire may look a bit small not filling out the wheel well, and there is not much sidewall protrusion to protect the wheel. See baseg35 pics in the Rides section.
https://g35driver.com/rides/detailri...lIdx=9&vehId=7

2. 245/45/18 all around. Benefits are ability to rotate tires, plenty of tire in the rear, near perfect height for speedometer and added wheel protection. Drawbacks are tight fit up front , TireRack not recommended and will the tire look "too fat" on wheel? See sjred in the Rides section:
https://g35driver.com/rides/detailri...lIdx=8&vehId=9

3. 225 on fronts and 245 on rears like the Coupe. Infiniti must have done this on the Coupe for one or more of these reasons: 245 too tight up front, emulate BMW's staggered larger rear tire setups, or the rear of the coupe just looked too small with 225's. Benefits are good fit up front, plenty of tire in the rear, BMW-like "staggered look" and correct rear tire height for speedometer. Drawbacks are inability to rotate tires=$$$ and little protection for front wheel. See G35spot in the Rides section:
https://g35driver.com/rides/detailri...dx=0&vehId=182

My initial thoughts are to go 225/245 staggered as this is visually perfect and speedo-friendly. I am worried about long-term costs with no tire rotation with this setup. 225's all around seems economically smart, but is that rear tire going to look tiny and will my wheels be in jeopardy even though I am VERY careful? Finally from sjred's pics, the S03 looks a bit fat on the wheel. That may be the pictures though and in person it may look fine. If it looks better in person, I'd consider this setup first.

Please everyone, give some good feedback on this one-especially those that have gone with 18's on the sedan- any regrets, things you'd do different or strong feelings regarding the tire sizes you picked?

Regards,

I personally would go 225/45/18 all 'round. With rotating and spare tire problems I'd stay away from stagger, given a choice.
That particular size is within about 1% of stock............ Just my $.02

245/45/18 all the way around on a 8 or 8.5inch wheel would be good...

As you said 235/45/18 is the ideal size replacement for the 215/55/17 stock tire but 225/45/18 & 245/45/18 are well withing spec too and will also work.

I'd go staggered and with the SO3's you get wheel protection because they come with a rim/lip that protects the wheel (unlike the Goodyear's or other tires shipped on the car by Infiniti) if you want a close up of this protect, check out my Boxster site at http://www.smiley.net/boxster/ in the pictorials section, I've got some close up's of the SO3's. Love those tires, can't go wrong with 'em, but probably overkill for the G...

baseG35,

Are you happy with the way your 225's look all the way around? It looks nice in the pics. Do you have any more pics up close? After reading some posts, doing more measurments, etc. I am leaning toward the 225's all around as my first choice and 225/245 coupe-like setup as my second. I think the 245's in the front will be too tall with too much bulge.

I'd like to hear from G35spot on the 225/245 staggered setup's effect on VDC. I personally think it will have no effect for two reasons: 1. the coupe uses a staggered setup and two, I think VDC looks at the difference in wheel rotation after taking an initial sample, so it detects the wheel slip based on the difference of the sample and detected wheelspin. This data comes from the ABS exciter ring on the hub if I am not mistaken, so wheel size may not be a factor. These are assumptions on my part.

I am still thinking on this one, keep the input coming-thanks!

235/45/18 M45 Tire Info

I’d like to share what I have learned regarding the 235/45/18 tire size on the 2003 M45 and update my decision. This info is current as of 1/3/03.

The new 2003 M45 has a W rated 235/45R18 or optional V-rated from the factory, which sounds promising for those of us who want to put 18's on our G35 Sedans, but want to maintain the stock tire diameter of 26.3". The M45 tire seems ideal- it is nearly the same diameter, a Bridgestone, and Infiniti is using them OE. Below I offer 3 observations for those in the market for 18's on a G35 sedan.

Observation 1:
We can use the stock M45 tire on a G35 with 18's. No price or availability at this time.

The stock M45 tire has some big drawbacks. 1. It is a Turanza ER33, which is a luxury car tire not great for performance. Bridgestone labels this a "touring" tire, which means luxury car-not performance. See Bridgestone' s Turanza ER33 web page. 2. The tire is not available in the aftermarket yet, and Bridgestone has no expected arrival date- which could mean 3 months or more. Only certain Infiniti dealers have a very small "emergency" supply for M45 customer emergencies. You can contact Bridgestone Technical Service at 800-847-3272 to verify. The 235/45WR18 tire has been assigned a Bridgestone "Article Number" (part number) of 001539 according to Bridgestone Tech Services if you are interested. The tire is too new to be in any catalog, online service, or even Firestone store database. Bridgestone Tech services is the only knowledgeable party on this so far.

Observation 2:
Use the new Continental ContiSport Contact 2 in the 235/45WR18 size. $194 each from TireRack

Benefits are that the Conti is a true Ultra High Performance tire according to TireRack. The diameter is 26.4"-near perfect-and looks quite aggressive. Conti's "30-Day Test Drive" guarantee looks like a nice way to check them out. Drawbacks are lack of availability today (not available until 1-18-02, not too long to wait though), general opinions of Conti's by some owners-noisy, poor wear, and lower wet weather performance. This tire is so new that there really aren't many reviews of the true Contact 2. With only 2 weeks to wait, and Conti's 30-day "Test Drive", these seem like a good choice.

Observation 3:
Use 225/45/18 Bridgestone S03's. $187 each from TireRack

Seems like a good current choice-25.9" in diameter and 804 revs/mile vs. stock 215/55/17's approx. 792. Benefits are that a number of members here are using them and seem quite impressed, “30-Day Test Drive” from Bridgestone, and from the pics (thanks to baseG35) they visually look like a nice fit. The only 2 drawbacks I have focused on so far is the reduced .4" height vs. stock and perhaps needing just a bit more tire under the car to fill out those wheel wells.

Observation 4:
Use Sumitomo HTRZII tires in 245/40ZR18. $141 each from TireRack

This is the tallest 245/40R18 tire made. It is .1" shorter in diameter than the 225/45/18 S03's - 25.8” in diameter and 806 revs/mile vs. the 225 S03's 804 revs/mile - overall very close. The benefits are a great price, decent reviews, and more rubber under the car without the tall, bulging sidewall of the 245/45. Drawbacks are the .5" shorter diameter vs. the stock G35 Sedan tire, no 30-day "Test Drive" from Sumitomo, unknown look on an 18x8” wheel, complaints from some owners of road noise after 10k miles, and perhaps slightly harsher ride.

My mid-decision summary so far:
Choice A: Go with the highly rated known factor and get the 225/45 Bridgestone S03’s. Choice B: While waiting for the Conti’s to come available on 1-18-02, order 1 wheel with a Sumitomo HTR ZII mounted and take a look and test fit. If they look good, order the other 3. If the Sumitomo isn’t right, send it back and order 4 wheels mounted with 235/45 Conti’s after 1-18-02 and give them 30 days to either impress me or disappoint me. It appears that waiting for the stock M45 Bridgestone Turanza tires is not an option due to their rather lackluster luxury car intentions.

Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.
