New rear pads at 6100 miles

My rear OEM brakes were squealing at 5800 miles. Took Infinit over a week to fit me into the schedule (I wanted a loaner instead of waiting). Front pads were only 20% worn. Rear pads were shot. They couldn't explain why such uneven wear. Just put in new pads and turned the rotors under the TSB for rear brakes, so didn't cost me anything. The tech said something that struck me as really odd, though. Asked if I did a lot of highway driving; said that would wear the rear pads more. (I usually do more city than hwy driving--though I did highway driving on vacation) Why would hwy driving do that? Sounds suspect to me.

Nothing should wear the rear pads that fast. The front brakes do most of the work stopping the vehicle. Always.

Were you getting a lot of brake dust on the rear wheels (more than the front)?

the only thing i can think of doing that is if you were driving with the emergency brake on.

Are we forgetting the small, insignificant fact, that on said vacation you just happened to stop at WATKINS GLENN!!!! Face it, you cooked the back brakes. There have been several reports here of these things not lasting more that one day on the track. I'd bet the stability control is a contributing factor, but if alot more track days are in your plans, you'd better learn to do pad changes at home, or consider an upgrade. Be glad you got a free set under warrantee.

I'm at 6,400 mi and mine are squeaking a little. Does that mean I have to change mine as well? I thought that brembo's were supposed to last longer than that.

Doubtful; the Brembos on your coupe are considerably more robust than those on dreamsenoi's sedan. You can of course, jack up the car, remove a wheel, and look at the pad thickness.

I beg to differ. Rear brakes will always last significantly longer than the fronts, track use or not. Perhaps there was another issue at work here. Emergency brake stuck on sounds like reasonable suspect.

No, rear wheels were pretty free of brake dust. I usually do the fronts twice a week, and the backs are still pretty clean.

Re: New rear pads at 6100 miles

Car wasn't driven with emergency brake on. And I never put the emergency brake on if the brakes are really heated up.

Yeah, I did the track, but when I checked them right after that there was not much wear on the front, though a lot more wear on the back--they were half gone at that point. The wear should be greater on the front than the back.

Also, I've done road track time in other cars (BMW and a G20) and never came close to going through nearly new front or rear pads in two days of road track time.

I'm still puzzled by the tech's remark about highway driving wearing the rears. About 3000 of my miles were highway because it's summer and I've been going places I don't go other times of the year.

Dream... there's another track racer on this board who says a 30-minute session on the track pretty does in a set of rear pads. So your track session probably did yours in as well. The G35 seems to exhibit heavy rear brake wear at the track... not a racer myself, I can't say why, but only repeat what I've read.

Re-read your Watkins Glen post, you might pick up something you missed the first time around.
