If the Tstat fails closed you will certainly have an overheating problem which can do major damage to your engine, that's why the smart engineers designed Tstats to fail OPEN.
There is a air relief plug on the upper heater hose, open it until coolant flows from it. The system is designed so that air does not "hang out" in the heater core.
Another way of checking the stat is to start up the car cold and open the radiator cap, if you got coolant movement (flow) the Tstat is NFG. With a good Tstat after a while it will open and the coolant flow will be very noticeable, put the cap back on.
