Make your A/C colder

I noticed on a hot day, that the A/C pipes in my car were sweating real bad due to the cold freon passing thru a pipe. Well this pipe was in the HOT engine bay. I thought the A/C would be colder if I insulated this pipe from the heat of the engine bay. I had some pipe insulation (get smallest size at hardware store, about $2.00) and proceded to wrap as much of the a/c pipe as possible. (see pic) I used wire ties to keep insulation on the pipe.
Yes it does help, the A/C blows a little colder.

Cheap mod, and works!!!

Very cool tip. A question on your car wax. It sure is shiny, who makes it?

Shine complements of Zaino (16 layers) so far. 3 or 4 in the signature pic.

Re: Make your A/C colder

I noticed that condensation on the AC pipes as well since LA was hot this week. I might buy some and wrap it. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Make your A/C colder

Bill, let me thank you for your continual excellent mod. suggestions. I have followed several of them. These pictures are intended to augment your basic suggestion by pointing out where others might find such insulation, as OSH stores are almost everywhere. Also, the adhesive already in place along the split line helps keep the insulation in place.

Re: Make your A/C colder

I'll bet you that the condensation here is probably the source of the water that pools under my car. That cold pipe, coupled with hot and humid Florida makes a nice puddle anywhere I park. So if I insulate it, condensation should be drastically reduced... not to mention that a colder AC in Florida is always welcome... I'll try this. And I'll try it on my Sequoia as well, it normally takes about 5 minutes for that AC to blow as cold as it should.

Re: Make your A/C colder

The condensation water puddle from the A/C system is common, even in low-humidity hot climates -- it just evaporates faster. The rear A/C unit in our Expedition generates enough condensation to actually run down the driveway and leave about a 1-2" wide trail.

It's the colored fluids dripping from your car that you want to worry about.
