Re: Make your A/C colder

Not necessarily. While this insulation would cut down on a very small amount of condensation, what you are observing is the condensation from the cooling coils, and that moisture is part of a correctly functioning air conditioning system. The outside warm air flowing over those coils is what keeps the system functioning. If you were to try to run the inside air over those same coils for an extended period of time, you would run the risk of having blocks of ice form all around those coils, and thereby shutting the system down. They recommend that you alternate between outside air and inside air when you encounter situations where it is so hot outside that the outside air setting can't reduce the inside temperature to tolerable levels.

Don't do it....

While I'm waiting pariently for my G, where I'm coming from (Explorer) had a similar issue with this around 98-99. Apparently Ford wrapped the accumulator (large black can on the low side of the AC system that gets cold and condenses) with a similar material to get the AC colder. Worked well for a couple years, but now many of them are failing due to rust. Apparently the foam will hold the water next to the pipe for a LONG time, resulting in rust over time....

Just a heads-up.

These pipes have all the appearance of being Aluminum. Does anyone know their actual composition?

The pipe will not rust. It is not steel!

Re: Make your A/C colder

I haven't have a chance to check if it help or not. I went even farther. Instead i went all the way behind the engine compartment and to the other side of the battery. The AC hose run all the way close to the battery before it begin to go inside the car. Don't know how much that will help but i figure, hell...got extra installation tubing, mind as well go all the way.

Re: Make your A/C colder

That is a great idea for the car.

The pipes will not rust. They are not magnetic (confirmed with a magnet therefore no iron, therefore no rust. I am guessing aluminum...which is used in small commercial refrigeration alot.

Make sure that the insulation doesnt redirect the water to pool around the penetration into the car.

Rubatex also makes a glue, similar to PVC piping cement. it actually seals the rubber by melting it slightly (sort of) so you can really fill in the gaps.

As far as condensation, remember that you can't get rid of all of it... there will always be a puddle under your car. This is from the drain off of the evaporator (the coil INSIDE your car). That is how an A/C "conditions" the air. Moisture (humidity) in the air is attracted to the relatively cooler evaporator coil. This water runs off the coil, collects in the drain pan and drips out of your car. Just like your home A/C, they all have a drain somewhere.

Interesting. Not to be a negative-Nelly or anything, but I wonder if there could be any negative side-effects to wrapping that pipe. Compressor locking due to inhibiting a certain degree of condensation from the pipe line?? Just a thought.
