To paint or not to paint?

For those guys with aftermarket stainless-steel/polished exhausts, do they ever tarnish to the point where they're not shiny anymore?

I'm not a fan of polished cans, especially on our cars because they're so obvious from the rear, but they're all that's available. So, i'm thinking of painting mine black before putting them on the car, leaving just the tips polished --- similar look to the OEM set-up.

However, if they tarnish fast enough, i'll forgo the hassle and just wait for time and the elements to do their job.

Thanks!

I have the FI exhaust and it cleans up easy using some polish ans steel wool #000, however I have been thinking of getting mine painted too because it looks a little out of place from the back

I'm with both of you on this as well. From the rear, the cannisters stick out WAY TOO much bc of the color. I think if they were ceramic black, they would be somewhat hidden.

try cleaning up the exhaust real good then hitting the can with a few coats of plastidip. i doubt it will stay with all the heat but that way you will get an idea of what your exhaust would look like painted black. if you dont like it you can just peel it off.

I guess I'm the minority here... I keep mine as shiny as possible.
I have the FI setup as well and as stated above, they clean up very easily with a little polish, even after looking like hell all winter long.

When/if I ever get an exhaust, I'm painting the cans. I like the "low profile" look as much as possible

So, i went ahead and painted it. Sprayed all the visible areas with 1200 degree paint, i may paint the side that faces the heatshield tomorrow... or maybe not, you can't see that part anyway.

Thanks for the input guys!

Very nicely done, i like how every time you do something you do it right and clean! and then follow up with helpful posts and pics, keep it up!

As for the polish on FI, mine is still shiny and i like it with my silver/black theme much like Aeson

Good point PD should be able to take it.

On a 75 degree day, the cans reach 130F after an hour-long freeway drive, the tips are in the 70s range. PD can withstand up to 200F.

I think if you had the murdered out look, black tips may be suitable. But on your car I think it'd look out of place
