Those Nissan pictures have me thinking - just install the JDM climate control buttons into the top glove box (leave it at 76 degrees 98% of the time anyway) and have the entire original faceplate to fill with a big touchscreen.

I wonder how much you could inset a touchscreen netbook or something in that spot...

I've got a extra stock faceplate from the DD conversion in my wife's.

If you were to go without the stock navi or storage compartment there, that's a good chunk of real estate to fill. With screen.

 

Ok there's 2 different ways to get this done. (in my book) lol

1- you can relocate the the AC controls above where the Cubby is. but will look kind of weird to me.

2- you can relocate the OEM heated seat buttons twds the top of the center console.
(like the picture below pointing the arrows)



and place the AC controls where the OEM heated seat buttons was once located.
(like the picture below)
**try to imagine the cup holder was still in it's factory position**





But you really don't need a super big tablet like the MR2. something a little smaller would do the job. If i had extra money laying around i would of had this project finished in no time. But once you have the right mind set, this Project can be a breeze.

 

If I do this, it won't be until I get back from a year in the middle east (so early 2011) but the only real issues are finding a screen that fits right (with Win7 being so touchscreen-friendly I imagine this will be easier in a year) and custom-molding a bezel. Wires can be extended easily and quickly, so the climate controls may find themselves in the center console, glove box, or even being used in the top part of the inset (gotta shade the screen from the sun!).

 

Wrathernaut and BKZJAYY718: Have either of you guys put a computer in a car before? I put one in my 2000 Trans-Am so if you need advice let me know. I'm planning on using some of the parts from the TA to put a computer in my 03 sedan, but I have to get the double-din kit first. If you relocated the AC controls (or if you're really good, integrate them into the computer) you should have enough room for a 10.2" touchscreen mounted sideways.

Shouldn't be hard at all. Once you have all of the right materials. I can't see why not.
