Power Problem? Big Install...

The tech's at sound advice are adivsing me to have my alternator rewound, they said that i need it to produce at least 200-220+ amps, What does ours work at?

I am going to be running this stuff:

-A lot of neons
-(2) JL 10w7's "Fiberglass molded in trunk"
-Front and Rear MB Quart PCE216 6.5"
-Rear deck MB Quart RCE269 6"x9"
-JL 1000/1
-JL 450/4
-JL 300/2
-(2) Monster DigiCap 1 Farad

They are also recommending to add another small battery?

What are you all's opinions, and what is the output for our alternator....?

Thanks!
-Eric

Re: Power Problem? Big Install...

How about a 2nd regular size Battery in the back, Maybe that will help. Make sure to use a gel battery like the red tops or lightning. There must be something that can be done.

ACTUALLY the Optima Yellow Tops are by far the best car secondary car audio batteries by far. Make sure they put an inline relay between the two however. Any audiophile that knows anything good about car audio will tell you the same.

Depending on your listening preference, if your not going to be driving the subs continuously at high levels your OE battery and alternator will be sufficient.
I've had a similiar system in another car for a couple years without having low voltage problems. Even during SPL competitions the brief load from the 1000 watt mono amp did nor effect any vehicle systems.

Re: Power Problem? Big Install...

first of all, the whole idea of using that capacitors is to stabilize the power running the amp - more stable power means that your lights don't dim, and the amps receive and equal amount of power at all times - therefore, it 'reduces' the ware on the alternator itself - you don't really need an alternator upgrade - in my opinion

secondly, the blue to optima is the marine application - better than the yellow and red tops - you could also use an odyssey battery, they're dry cell (safer for in car/trunk applications) and they're smaller, but produce the same cold cranking amps

third, why is it that you need 7 channels of amp? 4 channels for the front speakers, plus 3 channels for the subs? that's not right - unless you're just doing it for the 3 amp look and you're going to bridge the 4 channels for the front, the 2 channel for the rear fill, and the mono for the subs???

How much does it cost to have an alternator re-wound?
Also, where would you have something like that done?
Here is a link to a product to measure how much power you are using, not sure on the cost

Definitely up your power level man because your gonna drain your electrical system and the last thing you want is electrical problems. Also why are you gonna use three amps. Why not get the JL 1000/5 for your mids and highs and the 1000/2 for the w7's and a cap... I dunno but good luck

Re: Power Problem? Big Install...

Eric - If U don't plan on doing lots of listening with the car not running then a second battery ( even with a battery isolator ) isn't for U. In fact, it'll just wear your alternator out that much quicker since it'll have to charge two batteries instead of one. I did a similar system in my GS400 so I've been there. Consider a Jacobs Accuvolt. It's a step-up voltage regulator which will supply a fixed ( user adjustable ) constant voltage to your amps provided that U can maintain a minimium of 9.5 VDC goin to it. Additionally, it will also help clean up any noise within the system by stabilizing your voltage. I know the JL amps have the R.I.P.S. circuitry so if the Accuvolt isn't for you then perhaps a BatCap instead of the Monster Caps. I haven't competed in USAC in 2 years so I'm kinda out of the loop but these suggestions should give U something to think about. Good luck with the system!

Re: Power Problem? Big Install...

Here's something to consider:

I suggest we do a little math and see how much current you're trying to pull out of your alternator which if memory serves, is rated at 120A.

Your combined amp power is 1750 watts. Dividing power (1750w) by voltage (14.4V) gives you 122 Amps. But, you are actually pulling more current because your amps are nowhere near 100% efficient.

Assuming your amps are 70% efficient (which is highly optimistic since the 450/4 and 300/2 are not class D designs) you are sucking 175A out of an alternator that is designed to handle only 120A. And we're not even factoring in the power required to run the engine and AC, etc.

So if my numbers are correct, then it seems to me that the guys at Sound Advice are correct and you would need 200+ amps from your alt. I would spend the cash and upgrade that alt and definitely go with the two caps.

That's my 2 cents. Hope that helps you out.
