Has anyone attempted to take out the ashtray?

Is there a possibility to extract the ashtray, reposition the Warning
button and cut the console so that a regular stereo could be fitted in there? Has anyone attempted this yet? I did a search (ashtray) and didn't find anything. Some of the mods I have seen in the Forum look pretty nice, but I haven't seen any post considering the option of removing the ashtray. I understand that it wouldn't be the perfect place for a screen, being so low, but you could fit an mp3 player, which is basicly all I wanted to add to my car. Any ideas? Is there enough space behind the ashtray to put anythin in?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, someone has done it, I forget who. Underneath the ashtray area seems to be some sort of air ducts, he didn't elaborate on that but he had to remove them to fit a full din sized unit in there. I might do it for my mp3 player.. When I remove that console i'll let you know whats back there.

Nice install, but I've got to be perfectly honest here-- I like my Nav screen at eye-level, not my stereo. A little backwards, perhaps...

Re: Has anyone attempted to take out the ashtray?

Well, I don't think I would like to put the screen in there either, I was thinking about a din size mp3 player. As a matter of fact all I need is to put a DVD that reads mp3s, but I don't think there is a mod yet that allows you to control a DVD/MP3 unit with the original sound system (thru sat) so you need either a screen or an aftermarket stereo like the Alpine they put in there to control it. Now, seeing the screen placed there makes me think that there might not be enough space to fit a din size stereo. Damn. All I needed was a head unit that reads mp3s , no NAV, no TV, none of those things. I think it looks awesome, and the coolness factor is there, but not for the use I make of the car, which is mostly driving and enjoying the ride while listening to my music. The more I read the forum the more inclined I am towards spending the $$ on improving the sound quality. Oh well.... I guess I am a bit frustrated.
Clarion makes some great car stereos but I am really disappointed with the Bose spkr/amp combo. Another option could be to connect an mp3 player (iPod) and use avelectronics mod for the SAT input and spend the money on spkrs and amps. Are you guys getting a bit frustrated too? BTW the screens on the headrests look awesome!! Good job on those.

Re: Has anyone attempted to take out the ashtray?

maybe you should consider getting the double-din dash and replacing the bose HU? unless you wanted to keep the bose for some reason.

a side question for you guys:
will a DVD/MP3 machine, such as the alpine, play mp3s off of a DVD?
I assume it can read DVD just fine since it can play movies. cuz haveing 4.7GB of mp3s on 1 disc would be too amazing..

Re: Has anyone attempted to take out the ashtray?

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe BOSE is only the speakers and the amp, the head unit is made by Clarion, and from what I read from other posts, once you change the speakers and the amp the quality of sound is awesome.

I would like to keep the original HU because I like the wheel controls and I do not dislike the way it looks. Call me crazy but I think it matches the overall look of the interior (not as nice as I would have liked it to be but not that bad either).

A DVD filled with mp3s should play in a DVD/mp3 player... that is the whole point of being able to install a DVD/mp3 player unit for me. I could carry my whole collection in a few DVDs

Re: Has anyone attempted to take out the ashtray?

All of the home-theater DVD players in our house play MP3s off os DVDs... they also show JPGs, etc. too, so I don't forsee a problem with a portable having the same technology.

Re: Has anyone attempted to take out the ashtray?

As far as I know, they DVD players that play mp3's will only play MP3 encoded CD's.. not DVD's. Keep in mind, Burned DVD's are still sort of new to the market and every player would have to implement a way to read -R and +R media, even DVDRW, it will happen soon i'm sure.. Not 100% on this of course.

Re: Has anyone attempted to take out the ashtray?

boret, I don't really understand what you want....
you want to have both headunits at the same time? what is the point of that other than keeping the console looking nice?

but I agree, it's hard to find an aftermarket hu that matches the titanium trim =(

Re: Has anyone attempted to take out the ashtray?

I wish I knew, fluffy
I basicly didn't get the NAV cause I wanted to use the 2K for some aftermarket mods. My first idea was to buy the original NAV harness and put there a different screen, also get a DVD/MP3 player and place it in the glove compartment. To my surprise I found out that the Infiniti NAV harness, just the mechanism, was about $2000. So I scratched that idea. Then I started to look at what people were doing on the forums. I didn't see anything about placing something on the ashtray location that is why I asked the question on the first place. If I can put a din hu where the ashtray is I could buy a one of those head units that play mp3s and have faceplates that are small screens (for looks sakes) like the one on the picture, which shouldnt look too bad. Or a kenwood one, with the stealth mechanism, and paint the plastic side the same color as the console. I am trying to figure out exactly what it is that I would like to do myself. And talking about it is helping. Sorry if I sound a bit frustrated, but it is just a difficult choice.
