Bose tweeter upgrade
Bose tweeter upgrade
So in a post a few days ago, ppl were smack talkin the Bose system, and I agreed with some of them. The treble on the Bose wasn't the best I've seen, but then the mention of an tweeter upgrade for 60 bucks? Can someone get me some more information on this.. Where I can buy it/get it installed? Is the new sound quality really that good?

Re: Bose tweeter upgrade
Here's the tweeter upgrade with Polk document. The Polks can be bought for $60 from Crutchfield. It seems the fitting is tight in coupe's tweeter location compared to the sedan's.

Re: Bose tweeter upgrade
i just put mine in yesterday and u have to cut the cornors of the speaker for it to fit. it take to cut on both side and it will fit then u have to put some foam infront of the speaker beacue if it is touching the grill it will rattle. i am going to have to take the door apart again and fix it beace the speaker is touching the grill. it does work and sounds a lot better but it takes some work for it to fit in the coupe. i might recomend going with a smaller speaker
Re: Bose tweeter upgrade
Lots of folks have used the Polk tweeter with mixed results.
I personally don't care for it. I would look at Diamond Audio, Planet Audio or Focal tweeters.
Make sure you cross it over as I suggested in original post or it likely won't blend.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: don't go buy XX tweeters because people here have bought them. Go LISTEN to them, everyone likes something different! Also, look for sensitivity spec to be at least 91db or higher. That is the only spec that matters in this case.

Re: Bose tweeter upgrade
i listened to the poks one side while the bose were in the other and it did sounds a lot better but it wasnt great. there are probaly better tweeters out there. i wish i had shop around some more exspecily now that i had to modifie mine. it would have been better to have gotten a smaller speaker. BUt it doesnt mater this was a temporary fix untill i went all out with my speekers. i just couldnt stand not hearing the highs

Re: Bose tweeter upgrade
dont get me wrong there great speakers and for 60 bucks u cant beat em. there are just some other ones out there that i think would be better suited for this aplication. if you want somthing that u can do fast and is easy then i would get these and fallow the insturctions that the guy made but if u have a coupe get somthing else that will fit with out any modifications.
Re: Bose tweeter upgrade
BillR, I was just curious what you didn't like about the Polks. I was going to order them today. I am no audio expert, but I want more distinct highs under $100. What would you use. I know you said listen to them, but I need a starting place. Any specs besides 92dB I need to worry about when buying? Do you get more distinct highs out of a titanium tweeter vs. silk? If so, that is what I am looking for.

Re: Bose tweeter upgrade
khsonic03,
I just plain "don't care for" the Polks. IMHO, I don't think they are detailed, and to me....they sound dull. Now that said, everyone likes something different. For some folks they are fine.
Anyhow, DO NOT get wrapped up in specs. The only one that matters is sensitivity. That # should be as high as possible. If it is 90db or lower, you won't hear the tweets much and not be happy w/ the upgrade.
I am not that "up" on car audio anymore. We stopped selling it about 5 years ago to focus on higher end home audio. But I would listen to Planet Audio, Diamond Audio, Boston Acoustics - and some of the smaller (American) name speakers companies. The big boys (like Bose, Infinity) make junk and really only market their name.
Speaker composition doesn't really matter. In a car you won't really pick out the differences.
"generally" these are the characteristics:
Silk = wide even dispersion, good mids and highs, but slightly softer on extreme highs.
Metal = more focused dispersion, good mids, highs and slightly edgy. Very forward sounding.

Re: Bose tweeter upgrade
Since the bose sucks according to BillR why would you spend money on 2 speakers and leave the rest to be just bose? The sensitivity is important. The big thing you accomplish for 60 bucks is much crisper highs thanks to a better crossover. These speakers are not perfect but they add to the system 95% of what all the other overmarketed 250 dollar tweets do. Bose may not be the best but most people are looking to make do with it with out spending any more than the 1000 bucks they already spent on the bose upgrade. Once you start chasing that 5% you are in a land of diminishing returns and spending thousands to replace everything. so if you go top Quality on the tweets - do the doors as well.
Re: Bose tweeter upgrade
Well, I was thinking about doing the door speakers as well, but I have read that they are a weird impedence. Like I said, I don't know much about audio, so unless someone says brand X speaker will work with my car, I probably won't touch them for now. I do, however, love music and cannot drive without it, so I would love to upgrade the system in this car at some point. I have done a little research on it already, but not enough to make a big move. What would I have to do to upgrade the rest of the speakers without messing up the sound? Would I need a new amp to power the new speakers because they have beefier magnets? I guess I could use some help. As far as the tweeters, it's the same deal. I see that people have been successful with the Polks, so I ordered them yesterday. If there was another one of higher quality that I knew for sure worked, I probably would have ordered that instead.
