I got a navi on my G

Hello.
I installed pda navi on my G.
The navi consists of Toshiba e740 and Pharos GPS kit.
It works very nicely, but screen(3.5") is so small compare to OEM navi. However, that is not a big deal beside the installation cost between factory navi($2000) and mine(a little below $500).
Here is the picture of my gps.

Nice, what kind of mount are you using? Is it the one that clips onto the vent?

Re: I got a navi on my G

that is exactly what i have... hehe e740 and the pharos gps..

I dont like it a ton though.. the pocketpc is cool.. and it does work good when it gets going, but its always a pain getting it to acquire the sattelites initially.. but like you say..once it gets going its nice and works like a charm.. only other thing i dislike besides the slow startup and the small screen.. the lack of ability for lots of map area.. I have a 256mb SD card for maps.. which isn't bad it holds all of california which for the most part is ok.. but sucks having to load what maps you want and such..

Yes, it clips onto vent. The mount is included in Pharos GPS kit. You can buy same mount on ebay at around $10.

Re: I got a navi on my G

I bought Earthmate GPS from bestbuy (129 dollars). I then bought a power inverter (40 dollars).. Hooked it up to my laptop, and it tells me everywhere I need to turn, and of course has the normal crisp clear 15 inch display to boot.

Downside: size. Unless you don't have a passenger, they're going to have to hold the laptop all the way. Not that this is really a big deal, b/c most of the people I've ridden with have been so impressed with it that they did nothing but play with the software for 4 and a half hours.. kinda sucks when they end up knowing how it works better than you do though lol.

Nice install btw, very clean. I've thought also about going the PDA route... does it speak directions to you? If so I'm going to *seriously* think about getting it :P

I have the exact same setup and yes it does speak directions to you.. unfortunately they aren't super loud.. so needless to say if you have the windows down.. and you have the radio up.. its gonna be pretty tough to hear.. usually though at the very least when you get within like 1/2 mile of a turn/onramp/something changes itll make a *CHIME* which i always hear.. I guess because its kinda distint.. and then i look down and check out whats up for the next leg of the trip..

all in all it works good.. question though.. to the original poster with the pharos/e740 mounted.. how do you keep the f'in vent from falling forward when you put the pda on the holder? my vent is so loose it instantly just falls forward.. i put a little wedge of like cardboard at the bottom to increase the tension/friction and stop it from sliding.. but it doesnt always work be nice to have a cleaner way.. hehe

Re: I got a navi on my G

I recently purchased the Garmin IQue for navigation. It is a PDA that uses Palm OS and has an integrated GPS system. I was considering the E750 and Pharos combination but it was expensive. The Ique 3600 is a little slow when acquiring satellites and I find that it loses signal frequently. It's not as handy as I would like for my car, so I may eventually go aftermarket.

I wonder if the performance is similar between the two models. Otherwise, I'm returning the Ique.

Well.. even with the e740/pharos I would still like to go aftermarket.. cleaner.. bigger screen.. DVD containing whole country of maps rather than having as many as 15 maps/state with a limit of 10 maps loaded into mem at a time..

plus I would like the dvd/tv stuff.. just for the heck of it right?

stevedg35,
My vent is loose, too. So, I taped top of the vent with invisible tape.

I got really got good results with getting a Garmin Street Pilot III. Fits right in the upper storage slot. Doesn't move or fall out when I'm driving as well. No installation required.
