It depends on how much you want to spend, and if you are going with seperate amps or not.
I changed out my amps long ago, and kept the stock head unit for quite a while. I finally, this weekend, changed out the stock head unit for an Alpine DVA-9965. Pretty high end single DIN DVD/CD/HD radio player with no built in amp, but 4v pre outs. The rest of my setup is as follows:
Front Speakers: Boston Acoustic Z6 components, bi-amped with a JL Audio 450/4
Rear Speakers: Alpine SPS-17C2 6.5" coaxials amped with a JL Audio e2150
Subwoofer: JL Audio 10w6v2 in custom box amped by a JL Audio 500/1
Other: 0/1 gauge wire from battery to block, Streetwires fused power/ground distro block, 4 gauge wire from block to amps, dynamat all around, 1.2 Farad Tsunami capacitor
The head unit made a huge difference, but the rest of the system was important as well.
So thats my recommendation.

I have a used Sony XE-744 10 band Equalizer if you want that in there. It has a nice spectrum analyzer for a nice visual display. I had a double din set up in my old accord that I just stripped out when I got my G35. Check out http://www.discountave.net/xe744.html to see what it looks like. Let me know if you are interested.

Which HU
Dave,
I did what you did. I changed out the speakers and amps. I have jl audio 300/4 and a 250/1 pushing MB Quart components upfront, Boston Acoustics in the back with 2 jl 10W3's in the trunk. In the beginning, which is about 3 years ago, my system sounded fine. Now the radio cuts out all the time and since I plan on keeping the car awhile it is time to change the HU. I'm looking at the Eclipse CD5000 or 7000, both up there in price. Any thoughts?

I don't know anything about the Eclipse units, so I can't really make any comments there.
The thing I like about the Alpine that I got was that it has time correction for the sound. That is, it delays the sound of the speakers closer to you (by a few milliseconds) so that sound from all the speakers hats you in phase at exactly the same time. I was definitely able to notice a difference.
I'm sure Alpine isn't the only brand that has time correction, btu I don't know what others do.
Anyways, it was worth it to me, along with the rest of the featueres.
