Project Completed: Adding Factory Navigation

For the longest time, people have wondered if it is possible to add factory navigation to a G35 that didnt come with navigation. Answers were always ambiguous: "It's too hard, you need to replace your main harness, will cost you more than it cost from factory."

Today, I'd like to provide some good news for those that want to add navigation. IT IS DEFINITELY POSSIBLE. and the price is not that bad.

Here's a breakdown of what I did:
-Instead of exchanging the whole harness, i tapped wires and made my own harness.
-I have a 05 G35, but the 06 navigation system is a much improved version and looks much better. So I decided to go with the 06 version.
-Most parts were found off ebay or junkyards, dealer prices are ridiculous.

Here's a cost breakdown:
-Navigation screen: 160
-GPS antenna: 50
-Control buttons: 150
-DVD Unit: 550
-Misc parts (wires, connectors): 10

Total: 920

Not bad considering it costs almost 2000 from factory.

By the way, I did not need to replace the main wiring harness. I made my own. In addition to saving a few hundred bucks, making my own harness enabled me to tap into wires instead of replacing the entire harness.

Here are some pics for you guys:

The navigation is from a 350Z, therefore the startup screen is Nissan

You can kinda see the wires in there =P

Any questions or concerns are welcome =]

Very nicely done. I would have thought the screen would be the most expensive component. If all of this came from a 350Z, then how did you get the parts that hold the screen including the motor for it to go up and down?

Lemme see, factory install is $2000+, self install is $1000-. That leaves $1000 for more mods.

Could you provide some more pix of the entire dash? I want to see how the controls fit with the climate controls.

Nice job BTW. I wish you had done pixs along the way to show us how you did it!

Interesting, and goes to show what a little determination and free time can do. How long did the actual install take? Few hours? Few days?

Thanks guys, for the support. First of all, the screen was not from a Z. It was from a G35 that I found on ebay. The whole project took a long time, not because of the assembling, but because of gathering parts. I wanted to keep the budget around 1000 so I waited for chances to get the parts at good prices. The actual assembly of all the components took about 20 hours? So 1-2 days.

Sorry but I dont think this will work. My DVD unit is actually from a Z, not just the CD. You would need to replace the entire DVD unit to get this Startup Screen.
