Changing G35c compass to the Z digital speedometer

I posted this on a couple of Z forums, and I am hoping to get some guidance/interest in this project...

I had to trade in my 350Z for a G35c due to the unexpected future arrival of our first child.

THe G35 is a great car, but there are several things I already miss about the Z... the thing that I miss the most is the digital speedometer atop the dash.

On the G35, there is a digital compass in nearly the exact same place.

What I would love to do, and would need significant advice on how, would be to get rid of the compass and replace it with a digital speedometer.

I have both shop manuals on pdf for the Z and the G35c... From what I can tell, it appears that the G35 does transmit the vehicle speed to several different processors. I just would not know where to begin on something like this, and I would appreciate some guidance.

Thanks!

I think it would be very difficult since it looks like the compass is one LCD together with the temperature and AC read out.

Yeah they are all one piece. If you pull out the plastic that frames the clock and hvac display you will see it. What would be nice is if you could change the compass to a clock like in japan. Only problem is I think that would cange all the readouts to metric and like the rest of the country I just cant catch on to that, The compass is useless to me with Nav though.

Thanks for the reply guys...

I have the nav too, and the compass is useless to me as well.

Would it be possible to fit an aftermarket LCD speedometer over the compass display and just disconnect the compass?

you should get one of those things that projects the speed on your windshield like those caddys. I think someone on the board has that setup.

Buddha,

Cool idea...Projecting the speed on the windshield would work for me too.... i did a search on 'speedometer' and couldnt find anything on it. Do you know you has it, or remember the what thread it was?

I have a G35C and what I have dreamed about was useing the
"compass button = worthess" use of a button to toggle between the factory default displays and some performance data which would be hijacked into the factory outouts. Gauges like Oil PSI, Fuel PSI, Vaccum Boost, EGT. Since I intend to FI next year sometime. Doing this would probably require a new PCB with the muxing circuits added, but I think it would be a really sleek way to add gauges without hacking up the dash appearence.

Attached is the Terminal and Reference Values of the Navi Control Unit. It shows that Terminal wire #8 is the Vehicle Speed Signal (2-stroke) going into the unit...

I dont know how to do it, but I would imagine someone with an electrical background could figure out how to translate the occilation to a MPH value and then display it on an LED/LCD.

At the bottom of this product description, (http://www.defi-shop.com/images/basis.pdf) it describes a ratio of 2051 pulses/mile... id imagine that this is relevant to the formula, but i am guessing.

The head's-up display is available through most audio/video shops...www.sounddomain.com and similar sites should have it...As far as your idea to turn the gauge into the digital 350Z gauge, I don't personally know how to do it...Why not contact a mobile audio/video shop or performance shop? When all else fails, a large budget will solve almost any automotive quandry

Which car do you like more? The Z or the G, since you had the privilege of having them both

Re: Changing G35c compass to the Z digital speedometer

Big,

I would say that there are things i miss about the Z... primarily the HUD Speedo and the way it takes corners. The G35 i have seems to yaw a bit more around the turns, but that could be due to the Eibach springs that the previous owner installed.

The G35 has NAV and my Z didnt, plus the other ergonomic appointments that the G has just blow the Z away. All i need to make this my "perfect" car is the HUD speedo. I never had one before the Z, and now I am addicted to it.

With that said, I did come accross this webpage that has a schematic for taking a 2-pulse signal and translating it to a LED. This was originally designed for a Pontiac Fiero, but it appears that it could work for a Nissan product as well:
Click here for Fiero HUD wiring schematic

Any electronic guys able to make sense out of this schematic?

Re: Changing G35c compass to the Z digital speedometer

if there was a way to get the compass to be a digital speedometer that would be awesome.. there must be some way, but somebody's gotta figure it out..

i did run along this product by technosquare tho.. it's basicalli plug and play and it'll read out:

Speed (mph)
Water Temp.(°F)
Air Flow Meter (V)
Injector Duty (%)

here's the link: http://www.technosquareinc.com/cmx.htm
