clearance behind non-nav cubby?

for you guys that have been in there, how much room do I have to screw something into the back wall of the cubby? seems like alot of work to get it out completely.... or can I see it just by removing the side panels?

anyway, I want to mount a base for a PDA mount and maybe use <1/2" screws. Anything back there to worry about? I noticed someone put a 12v outlet in there, seems like there might be alot.

thanks
tim

There really is'nt much room. I guess you can put the mount there. I put in a double din pioneer and bluetooth and ipod adaptor and there was no room at all.
I think you can see the area by removing the sides.

good luck.

yup, not too much room. you need to take off the underdash knee panels, glovebox, center console shifter trim to get the cubby out.

I was really only worried about the screws hitting the AC stuff. But again, i was gonna use tiny screws (maybe 1/4") and it appears there's a metal shield between the cubby and AC core?

do you recall how much space was between the cubby and plate? from pics, it looks like I can get away with a 1/4" screw.

I think a short 1/4" screw would be ok. it wasn't a snug fit maybe 1/4" to 3/8" space.

hmm, do you think there is more room in the front of the cubby? (AC board side) it looks like there might be.

You could ask Russ for the manual in PDF

not sure, but you would be safer putting a screw into the back. Don't want to put a screw in the AC controller, then your're really screwed.

The AC controller is well below the cubby. I'm not sure how you plan on mounting it, where you think you'd be in danger of screwing into the AC controller.

I wanted to put this

inside the pocket.

the top half would be like this
http://www.gpscity.com/g/h/l/ramholpd3br.jpg

just curious, after inspecting it, it doesnt look like there is anything infront of the cubby (whereas the plate is pretty close behind). Wouldnt I have to use 3" screws to hit the AC board? I'm talking 1/4" at most needed to put this thing in. a pda is like 6oz (2x with mount), it doesnt need much.

I also intended to swap out a screen at times. just want the mount base hidden away.

search for godofcpu's posts... you might find some pictures if you plan on doing this without taking the console out.

Which cubby are you referring to? The one above the radio or the one above the glove compartment? If it's the one above the radio, you can drill towards the back and shouldn't have a problem with 1/4" screws. If you drill down, you'll most likely hit the headunit. For the cubby above the glove compartment, there's really not much behind it that a 1/4" screw would do much damage. How do I know all of this? Mine is still apart from an on going project. For the new '05+ interior, it doesn't take that much effort to remove the cubby. You'll have to basically take out the headunit. It's a lot less work than a pre '04 dash from what I've read/heard.

thanks all. I'm going to remove the sides (and check my incabin filter while I'm at it). I will see what is visible.

given what everyone has said, I'll mount to the rear of the cubby (above the radio). I'll drill it first (angle drill) with a piece of tape on the bit to know I've only gone in a few mm. then, poke something thru to make sure the screw has clearance.

thanks again.
