Bit rates of music played via HD Music Box and CF payer

1) When CDs are recorded to the HD music box, are they automatically converted to 128 kbps mp3 files?

2) If I store a whack of mp3 files on the CF card, at different bit rates ( eg some at 128 kbps, some at 320 kbps), do they get played at that rate, or are they played at a fixed 128kbps regardless of how they are stored.

I really doubt that the head unit has the processing power to convert MP3 files to a lower bit rate on the fly. It uses the lower bit rate on the music box to compensate for the small amount of free hard drive space but I am not sure if it uses MP3 compression or if it uses something better.
