Factory NAV Question

Ok, I've had my 04 G for over a year now, and for the life of me, cannot seem to figure out a few things about the Nav system:

1.) When scrolling around on the maps, sometimes when you hit the scroll button the map scrolls really quickly (if you hold it down, the map scrolls one huge chunk at a time, stops, and then continues moving in large chunks), and sometimes it scrolls slowly as you hold it. It seems to switch between the two diff scroll speeds whenever it likes to...am I missing something, becuase sometimes I require the exactness of the slow scroll and sometimes i want it to scroll across quickly in large chunks. What am I missing?

2.) If you enter a destination, and you don't like all the roads it chooses, is there a way to tell it which road you want to use instead. For example, if it tells you to take I-395 south, and you know there will be a lot of traffic on that road at the moment, can you tell it to use Route 23 (which runs parallel to 395 for example) instead, BEFORE embarking on the journey rather than taking route 23 forcefully and having it recalculate afterwards?

Thanks!

For #2, the only way is to set a waypoint somewhere on the road you want to be on.
