Anything is possible. I looked into this when I first got my G. There's like 3 wiring harnesses going to the DVD drive. You're looking at close to 50 wires.

I'm sure that it's possible but with 50 (or so) wires to re-route....
I'm going to look into this more...
I'd really like to put Gauges in that location !

I remember trying to have the audio shop put a dvd player where the navigation unit was. They told me it would be a pain in the ***.

I went and checked the FSM to make sure I wasn't exaggerating on the wires too much.

On the back of the Navi Control Unit there are 3 harnesses:
M57 - Wires/Pins 1-24
M58 - Wires/Pins 25-48
M59 - Wires/Pins 49-50

What kind of guages would you like to put in there? Ever thought of putting guages ON your OEM navi?

I'm running a UTEC and displaying RPM, boost, A/F, and other things right on the OEM navi screen.

Kevin,

I am interested in your setup. How did you get the OEM navi to display info from the UTEC? Does the front-end interface actually have hi enough resolution? Lastly, is there a lag between the car and the display? Thanks in advance!

First, to do it the way I did it, you need an video-->RGB converter (the ones people use to play DVDs on the Navi screen.

Then, you need a UTEC and an A/F guage (I am using the AEM).

Next, you need a computer. Right now I am using a laptop that sits on the front seat but I am in the process of installing a dedicated CarPC in the spare tire.

There is no noticable lag, and the resolution is fine. The frontend I am using is someone limited, but supposedely there is a better one out that I will start using with my new CarPC.

Here are a couple of videos:

http://www.kptechnologies.com/movies/UtecNavi.avi (Parked, 7.17Mb)

http://www.kptechnologies.com/movies/UtecNavi2.avi (Moving 3.45Mb)

Using the laptop is someone inconvenient, but once I get the CarPC installed it will be perfect.

The UTEC communicates with the computer over USB and the wideband has an RS232 (serial) output, so you will need a serial port. The video is just a standard video out (yellow RCA type plug).

To switch between the Navi display and the guage display I am using a KPtechnologies OK bypass module. It has an AUX output that switches a relay by pressing the 'OK' button in a certain way. The unit also emits an electronic beep when it switches, make the whole switch process very OEM.

Thanks for the prompt response and the videos to boot!

All of that makes sense once you factor in the PC and RGB converter.
I wonder what the new front-end looks like.

once i go FI.. i wanted to do the guages in the DVD location for Nav as well...

is there anyway to relocate it somewhere in the passanger foot area without dealing with 50+ wires.

If it all comes down to it.. i like the navi guages... is there a night mode to that screen? i wouldnt want it to be THAT bright at night

The harnesses are very short. You may be able to move it slightly, but not a major move.

When the navi screen 'dims' the image on it still dims, so it isn't bad at night.

Check out this thread for front ends for the Utec: http://www.my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=266707
