I wouldn't say it's completely useless, but definitely a shortsighted design move on Pioneer's part. If you want full detail on navi, you need the navi DVD inserted, but that means you can't listen to CD's.

only cons I could find for it was it wasnt a touchscreen (which i dont really need and i'm on a budget anyways) and it has no gps which i also really dont need. any suggestions?

I have the D3, and it's really nice, the good thing is you can match the OEM lights. The bad thing is you only have 1 cd\dvd slot. But it's a cheap unit, lots of online stores are selling it for about $700. If you listen to cds alot and dont have an iPod, you can add a separate cd/dvd player and hook it up to the d3. That would only cost an extra $100. Then you'll be able to switch back and forth from Navi or cd/dvd.
