I wouldn't say it's completely useless, but definitely a shortsighted design move on Pioneer's part. If you want full detail on navi, you need the navi DVD inserted, but that means you can't listen to CD's.

I just installed a D3 in my car. I just use an IPod that has all my music and leave the Nav. DVD in most of the time.

Then why do you need a different head unit?

I have the 8019 and one of the main differences is the 8019 has 5volt preouts. If you dont plan to run amps then this may not be important to you. I am completely happy with the unit. I can load a dvd with tons of mp3's and never have to change discs... unless I want to watch a movie. I also have the navi and its been great. Also have the pac unit that allows me to use the steering wheel controls.

Can you watch DVD's while driving with the 8019? Do you need to do anything special to wire this up?

I have the D3, and it's really nice, the good thing is you can match the OEM lights. The bad thing is you only have 1 cd\dvd slot. But it's a cheap unit, lots of online stores are selling it for about $700. If you listen to cds alot and dont have an iPod, you can add a separate cd/dvd player and hook it up to the d3. That would only cost an extra $100. Then you'll be able to switch back and forth from Navi or cd/dvd.
