FM Tuner very weak with AVH6800-DVD

Hey guys I was wondering if you can give me a hand.. im in the socal area and the only stations that work for me are the main ones (like power, kiis, kost, and kbig) all the other channels like 98.7, or kroq are very weak. This is with my AVH-6800DVD head unit. I know it's not location problem because all 3 of my other cars with stock radio pick up teh stations perfectly fine. Sometimes even power is static like. So my question is, is it the headunit that is the problem or the antennae adapter? I think I recalled my previous aftermarket headunit the same way...

So what would be a good remedy for this? Swap out antenna adapters?? I just don't think that would help.. is this a common characteristic of aftermarket headunits?

Who did the install? Did they connect the power antenna lead? We don't have a power antenna but there is an antenna booster that is powered and must be turned on.

A friend installed my first headunit.. and I installed my 2nd headunit. I basically left the antenna adapter from the first install and just connected to my 2nd head unit. Can you elaborate on the booster on where and what it looks like?

The booster is apparently tucked away near the rear window where the antenna is located. Just make sure the power antenna lead is connected.

Alright I need your help guys.. i completely took my dash apart and i managed to find the antenna booster wire that gilley was talking about. It is a green cable and it was connected to my head unit which is the blue and white wire. When I disconnect that cable my signal completely goes away.. so i'm pretty sure thats the correct wire. I recrimped it incase the connection was loose. The antenna jack is also connected.

But i'm still getting *****y reception.. could it be something else? Could it be the actual antenna in the rear deck? Am i missing any other connections? Could that antenna adapter thingy be faulty? It worked fine with my previous head unit..

Im not trying to change the subject but how is your am reception? Is that also bad? I have the kenwood 8019 and my am reception is almost non-existant. My fm reception is average at best. I was also thinking of changing the antenna adapter, thinking that may be defective.

i just went to check.. turns out my AM is non existent as well and my FM reception is exactly as you say it.. "average". It works and stuff.. but static and sometimes goes away for a couple of seconds.. never consistently pure.

I'm using the same antenna adapter as when I was using my old head unit which was a kenwood ddx8017. I'm assuming all antenna adapters are the same right?

You want to try changing yours and see if it does anything and report back?

bump guys.. any answers?

Does the wiring harness have anything to do with radio reception? Because I simply just transfered the wires when swapping headunits..(kept the plugs connected from car to harness and disconnected the other end from old headunit and connected to the new head unit)

thats strange..mine reception is very good. my advice is MAKE SURE that the antenna booster is hooked up and change the adapter. It may not be the correct one. I am also using a pioneer, but the D3..but i imagine it being just the same.

I have had 3 aftermarket HUs since 2004. 2 Panasonics, 1 Pioneer.

The Panasonics did okay with FM reception but was definately weaker than the stock HU. My current Pioneer HU has very poor FM reception. I live and drive mainly in the country but the reception will definately improve when I get into the city so I think it is HU specific. All my wires/antenna adapter are connected right.

But, then again, I don't listen to the radio anymore anyway. My Ipod is connected to my HU and the HU has mp3/WMA/AAC capability as well. I do miss listening to the weather and traffic but again, I do live out in the country.

Bottom line is that I think FM reception is substandard with aftermarket HUs.

if you put on an antenna booster it will make it stronger but it will bring in more noise

YES! thats your problem..nissan/infiniti has a dual something antenna, basically searches for the best signal. I dont know of any other car that has it. get that..5 bucks at your local walmart or zippos, and it will most likely fix your problem

Hopefully i wont have the same problem with my Avic D3 whenever the insurance sends it.
