No need to tear the dash apart. At its most simple, just 2 nuts in the trunk, one to take the pastic cover off the amp area, and 1 from the bose amp rack to ground the unit. Done.

However, if you want to actually browse the ipod rather than select playlists, the eclipse unit may be a better choice for you. The oem adapter controls don't lend themselves to browsing a large collection easily.

I use the nissan adapter and love it. I also have the DLo from before i got the unit and i use it for trips when i have a rental car.

The tape heads are such poor quality I have to agree.

I just started using a tape adapter yesterday. I would have done it much earlier, but I had read so many reviews that it doesn't work. I had tried an FM modulator once and that was crap. Yesterday I stopped by the parents house and took a Emerson (super POS) tape adapter they weren't using and to my surprise it worked....quite well actually. The sound clarity is no different than when I plug my Zen into a new rental with an input jack. I'm not enough of an audio freak to care about the minute difference and I'm not willing to spend $220 on Nissan harness, much less an IPOD.
