Do I cave in? Avelectronic tuner.

I found an avelectronic tuner for ~$250 and I'm thinking... I'd be stupid not to! So, I know it's been discussed a thousand times, however now I'm sure those with the tuner have spent more time with them since it was all discussed initially, and can give more comprehensive opinions; Good quality? Worth it? I'm thinking that I'm looking at $200-250 for the unit, plus a cheapie DVD player. I'll do a search in a second (the whim to post just hit me, sorry), but what am I looking at for an install charge, and what're the logistics of hard-wiring it into the tape input instead of running it through an FM mod? I have yet to use the tape deck, and don't think I ever, ever will.

Definitely. I use mine every day. I didn't try the tape adaptor so I can't help you there.

Reception depends on your area. I get great reception most of the time, sometimes I even get MTV2.

Pretty funny thing happened on the way to work today. I usually listen to the tv news & watch it at red lights. I see them doing a preview to a report on my base and they're live. I'm driving up the street, traffic is horrible and avg speed usually 10mph and I see the news van and antenna. They cut to the girl doing the story and as I drive by her slow I see my car on tv in my car. Pretty dam weird.

Solely by looking at the pictures, i would venture to say that it IS the avelectronics unit. But that is simply by looking at the unit. You might want to send him an email to be sure. If it is the real deal, its a damn good price for it at this point. If its not the same, its still a good deal. Keep us posted on what you find out.

heres the email and response i got from him.

I wrote:
Is this the avelectronics unit? Or is it a replica of that unit? Thanks.

He wrote:
It is the OEM unit that Avelectronics remarkets as the Nav-TV DVD player.

So it seems to be the real deal. Hope that helps someone out.

There is no OEM unit. It's a knockoff. Pay the extra money and get the included warranty from AV.

Yea, there is no OEM unit from infiniti obviously. But for some reason i took that reply to mean that it is the OEM avelectronics unit. I guess after you read it a couple of times, it starts to sink in that it might be fake...I dont know...maybe it isnt worth it. Thats for the interested party to decide. Good luck to whoever does decide to purchase this unit. Hopefully it works out for you.

Re: Do I cave in? Avelectronic tuner.

My feelings are that I'm tapping into a $2k piece of electronic equipment and voiding it's warranty. Is it worth the $100 saved to go with something that might be from a flea market or made in someone's garage?

Re: Do I cave in? Avelectronic tuner.

Yea, i would spend the extra money for sure, but there are always those looking to save a buck. Maybe theres someone willing to experiment, why not let them....If it is a good product, then maybe its a worthy option to the avelectronics unit. Im not going to try it out because i dont want it in my car right now. If i was in the market for it, i would give it a shot for maybe $250. If it works great, then i just saved $275. If it doesnt work, i can probably have it modified so that it does work and still be under the cost of the avelectronics unit. Thats my thinking on this piece of equipment. In the end, you have no warranty anyway and i highly doubt this piece of equipment will mess up your nav. It may not work right, but it wont mess anything up imo. You can always just have it removed and replaced with the avelectronics unit if you wish.

hard to believe its a knockoff - the box appears identical from the picture. even the remote seems to be the same.. there seems to be a raised structure in the middle of the box though, and a label on the remote that doesnt show on the stock photo. why do you think it's a knockoff?

I might have to put a bid on this if it stays below 285
