I'm talking to several dealers about a G35x AWD sedan. I want the premium package as well as XM Satellite Radio. One of the dealers I spoke with said that they have two premium AWDs on the lot, one of which doesn't have XM. They said they could install it as a dealer option and it would be no different than factory XM.

Is this true? I thought the dealer installed XM would result in a separate XM tuner attached to the center console whereas the factory XM would be integrated into the Bose sound system.

Is there any difference between factory XM and dealer installed XM?

(BTW, the price I am being quoted to install XM is $400 including 2 months of free service and no activation charge, is that reasonable?). Overall price quote for the car is about $1,800 under MSRP.

$400 for parts, install, and 2 months free isn't bad, considering most people pay ~300 for the parts alone.

The dealer-installed will be exactly the same as factory, no worries. I had my installed, and it still just uses the SAT button on the console-- no aesthetic changes whatsoever. Good luck!

My dealer told me the final cost after parts and labor was 832.68 If you want it that bad then get it with the car. It will probably be cheaper. Since I hated the Bose stereo so much, I got a pioneer after market DVD player with XM radio.

 

I'm guessing your car wasn't prewired, though. Those that are ar emuch cheaper-- fast install, cheap unit. Now, if you car was already prewired, your dealer was just trying to royally hose you.

I have seen photos from people who have installed their own XM with the antenna located on the back shelf, etc. When the SAT is factory or dealer installed, where is the antenna located?

I think when it's factory, it's on the roof. When it's dealer/self-installed, you can probably choose. I've got mine on the trunk.
