Upgraded my stereo today

Well after 4 days of speaker break-in .. I realized as many of you that the low end sub is terrible and the tweeters have no high end range "flat" so it was time to change some pieces..

I did not want to blow big bucks as I change cars every 2 years....but the final result is pretty good.

Here goes:

Tweeters in front doors : Listened to Infinity Kappa's and Pioneer... Bang for the buck i went for the Pioneers "they where abit less agressive with the stock bose amplifier.
N.B.> the stock tweeters are sub standard devices..
Note: with the kappa's i could hear the cd disk's changing thru them.. not very fun to hear that during a trip.

Mids: I will upgrade perhaps next summer. The stock ones have a decent configuration and are well balanced for a stock setup.

Lows: I am not a boumm boumm fanatic and love clean deep base...
the OEM stock sub is the worst component of this audio system.. so i used a tunable crossover to change its range and installed a Sub box in the back with seperate amplifier.
Small (8inch)sub in a vented box with a small Alpine 80watt mono amp. " small kit with an underpowered amp !! but it did wonders to the low end and now everything is tighter and much cleaner in the back.

I can now listen to music and enjoy it !!... and now my treble setting can stay at 0 and i have high's !!!! youpii..

Be aware that anything going through the factory Bose amplifier is being altered by the bose "tuning" curve that. Bose harmonically alters the line signal from the head unit before it gets to the speakers in order to achieve the best sound from their speakers. So if you are using the Bose amp on aftermartket speakers, you are probably not getting true sound.

yup.. but just changing the speakers is a great mid-level upgrade that is in my opinion a BIG step up from the factory OEM stuff...

Thanks for the comment regarding the filtered/tuned amp

Agreed.. the Bose speakers are a step up from normal factory speakers, but they still pale in comparison to real component speakers.

I'm thinking of putting some MB Quart's in my G35S, and probably 1 JL 12" sub in the trunk. I don't want anything big and boomy but I like some clean low-end. The subwoofer in the Bose system is so muddy it's pathetic.

Hey youngcanuck, what type of input did you use to the new amplifier you installed for your new sub? Line level, or does the Bose head unit have a pre-amp?

Re: Upgraded my stereo today

I plan to order a G35 Coupe and am interested in upgrading the stereo. I'll probably forgo the Bose option since I agree that Bose generally sounds bad (as one put it, Bose blows). In my Audi A4, I'm running a McIntosh head unit and McIntosh amps driving Diamond Audio speakers with a 12" Hsu Research sub. Sounds amazing.

I probably won't go to that extreme in the G but am wondering if the standard system has a standard setup: head unit -- amp(s) -- speakers. Is it possible to replace the amp(s)? Is it necessary to make custom brackets for the speakers, etc. I'm guessing that the coupe will be similar to the sedan.

Thanks.

I used speaker level "not the best" but good enough for me...

I could not find the line level data from the head unit.

regards.
